She owns what looks like a small house on East 81st. It's a very large home for the city, much larger than a typical townhouse and I think she paid somewhere around $40 million for it. I would think it would afford her afford her more privacy than she would have in an apartment building. I wonder who owned that home before she bought it because it is much larger than the neighboring homes.

She paid $32,000,000 in 2009 and has been renovating since then: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/357298-townhouse-152-east-81st-street-upper-east-side-new-york

Of the three original houses, two had been combined by the previous owners and lived in since at least the 1960s. They seem to have to kept the third as a rental.

I think the original owner of Madonna's new house was Clarence Dillon, the founder of the investment bank Dillon Reade and one of the wealthiest financiers of the 1920s

UES mansion sells for $32M
July 08, 2009 02:06PM
A triple-wide Georgian-style mansion on the Upper East Side sold for $32 million, one third off last fall’s listing price of $45 million. The 13-room mansion at 152-156 East 81st Street was owned by the late Louise Hoguet Saurel and was sold by Saurel’s heirs to an entity called Sefada LLC, going into contract in March and closing June 19, according to city property records published today. There were no mortgages listed for the purchase. Saurel lived in the 57-foot-wide townhouse until her death in 2008 at age 92. [more]
