Contractor left a mess and won't fix it

Hi, I am finishing up a bathroom remodel project (10-15 days late). The contractor is not agreeing to pay for some areas of my unit that he damaged (walls, baseboards, scratched floor, paint). I am considering calling his insurance, however I would prefer to just be done with this project and call a handyman to fix up the damage. I am considering taking $500-$1000 off the final payment with an explanation and pictures. Has anyone had experience in a similar situation?
