Discussion about
Doing a gut reno of a recently purchased apt. I am being told that As per DOB all renovation jobs filed in buildings built before 1986 require a recent asbestos inspection report. Is this correct? How much should it cost?
That's true. Your architect or expediter should be able to provide an inspector. I would expect a few hundred dollars to cover the site visit, testing of samples, and report -- though it could be a bit more.

Thanks Uptown!
Sammy,
I think its around $400.00
It will be in the range of $5,000. The laboratory costs alone will be over $1k-2.5k. You then must file an ACP-5 or ACP-7 form.
Aboriginie,
I believe you are talking about an abatement not an inspection
The inspection and lab costs should only be $400-700. A cost of $5,000 would definitely involve abatement of some kind. Like joe says, your architect should be able to provide someone. I use ACC Asbestos, they are reasonably priced and typically can schedule an inspection within a couple days.
This is news to me. I am doing a gut bath/kitchen in a building built in the 60's. Am I doing something wrong?
I stand corrected. My initial pricing of $5k was for a multifamily. Not a single unit.

Your building probably did not require you to get a permit therefore in theory you didnt need to get an asbestos report
Ok. Thanks everyone!
Just got my bill in the mail for an asbestos inspection for a 2br/2ba apartment in Manhattan.
Site visit (to gather the samples) and the report = $400
Each sample analyzed using polarized light microscopy = $20
Each sample analyzed using transmission electron microscopy = $70
Had about two dozen samples taken, fortunately most of them analyzed with PLM and not TEM. Total cost was about $1000.
It should be around $400-600 for a one bedroom, could be more depending on the size of the apartment and variety of materials around.
I can recommend the inspector I use on every job. Affordable, professional, and accommodating with people's schedules. Mary Hartigan - 914-494-2285
Good luck with your renovation.
