Discussion about
Hi, I currently live in Park Slope and am looking to move the family to Forest Hills. Does anybody have any comments (positive or negative) on PS 101? Thanks!
A lot more space for your money. PS 101 is a large, crowded school but certainly no worse than Park Slope. Safe and quiet (as long as away from Queens Blvd) neighborhood. Easy commute to midtown.
PS 101 is "the school in the Gardens." The last time I looked it was not a large crowded school but perhaps our criteria are different. They have a nice website and you can learn more about the school there.
The public schools in Forest Hills are all fine, but they are still NYC public schools. Decades ago, my children went to 101, the Kew Forest School and the Montessori Academy on Junction Boulevard. All three were excellent schools. I would not send my children to a public school now. In fact, I would give up a room of my house or work an extra job to avoid sending my children to NYC public schools as they now exist. I am sorry to say that, because I used to be a vocal proponent of public school and I was a member of what was the old-time equivalent of today's CDEC for District 28. But if you're set on public schools, you will be happy with PS 101 or PS 196.
Forest HIlls is a great place to live but it all depends on what is comfortable for you. You will not find the concentration of (sorry, again, IMHO) elitist helicopter parents that can be found in Park Slope, although they are beginning to show up in greater numbers because they can't afford to live in Brooklyn anymore. The entire neighborhood is not child-centric. There is more ethnic diversity, there are many elderly people, there is a dearth of cutesy shops, there are a lot of playgrounds. Forest HIlls Gardens is different from the rest of Forest HIlls. I'm wondering if you've actually gone out there to take a look yet.
Forest Hills is much cheaper, and right now both the rental and sales
markets appear to be in something of a slump.
There are a large number of Sponsor, no-board-approval coops on the
market now for sale: buying one let's you pay and move in the same day
rb345 no building will let you pay and move in the same day. You may be confusing coops with motels.

The apartments you're talking about are not in the area that people usually think of as Forest HIlls. They are between 99th St and 108th St right off the LIE and the Grand Central. The elementary school is not as good there and it's a long walk to the subway. The market in Cord Meyer and south Forest Hills is not in a slump at all.
generallagoun:
1. you could be right about the location of the Unsold Shares for sale in Forest Hills
2. I have been trying for months to locate one or more to buy
3. and have found either that sponsors wont sell their unsold shares to investors
4. or that they are located in the areas you refer to
Ignore anyone who says "Forest Hills" and "cheaper" in the same sentence. They have zero clue what they are talking about.
