Discussion about
Didn't see it on this website yet. http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/events/district-3-community-education-council-meeting PS199 and PS191 have been proposed as redevelopment sites (i.e. schools on bottom, residential condos on top) by the NYC Education Construction Fund. They have received quite a few proposals for both sites (PS199 >> PS191). One successful (?) precedent in NYC was the redevelopment of the old PS59 site on E. 57th Street. and MS114/Azure at East 91st Street. The ECF was inactive for many years prior to 2005, and to my knowledge have not yet done a project on the UWS.

The 57th Street site demolished the HS of Art & Design. The rebuild around the corner is, in my opinion, not as good. It reflects the Mayor's lack of interest in vocational education. Not to mention that the students did without an auditorium, a gym and a lot of classrooms for a long time. It was not a win-win -- only the developers won there. And, I guess, UES residents who wanted a Whole Foods. (That's how one of my UES colleagues saw it, anyway.)

The Mayor's little bean-counters who think that DOE is a business will be starting to look for new jobs just about now. If this idea is only in the proposal stage, there's a good chance it will never happen. It's too late for Art & Design, though.

I think there is a good chance it will happen. But the community (including myself as property owner and parent) need to step up to say what should be done with the site.

I also think that redevelopment of the Amsterdam Houses is long overdue. My vote is for mixed housing development or affordable (restricted income) co-ops AND re-evaluation of the super block.
