Long time poster here from way back here, looking to pick the brains of fellow SEers. I bought in 2009 (when everyone was convinced Manhattan was going to $500psft) in a prime location (Soho) and my monthlies are really really REALLY cheap. So need west side? Hells Kitchen is not that bad, but does not have the downtown feeling. Over around 10th you can get some different places. Will be tough if your comparison is Soho. Good luck!

Hells Kitchen West 50s..

.. far enough from PA/Lincoln Tunnel traffic, close enough to get in/out, close to CP

ps am in a similar boat, curious if you used a broker in your purchase.. if not , aside from SE what did you use?
