New Ceiling

Previous owners of our pre-war 2 bedroom apartment made a number of cheap renovations. The most, um, unfortunate was lowering the ceiling in the living area and both bedrooms. The hall ceiling is original height (9') but all of the rooms have had ceiling fans installed and what appears to be a completely new ceiling installed just over (or under?) the old one, making the height 8'4". I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what it might cost to rip the out the new and old ceilings then install a new ceiling with low profile recessed lights or maybe a tin ceiling instead. 3 rooms 15x16, 18x11, and 9x12. Thanks for any insight or experiences with this sort of thing.
