My niece wants to rent in 109 Gold St. Notice that it's near the projects. How safe is it -especially walk to subway? Seems kind of deserted area,

Curious, where does mym live? NYC is generally safer than almost any large city (and most suburbs) in the US, so most of the time when these sort of posts are posted, the crime rate is actually HIGHER where the person asking the question lives. When I moved from CA this was definitely the case - a some of my relatives and friends worried about the crime in NYC, and I had to point out the crime rates where worse where each of them lived (like, specifically, I looked it up.)

I'm not sure which projects you're talking about. I walk there a few times a month. There's a Mitchell-Lama development down the block (or whatever it's called now), as well as Downtown Hospital. The smallest Gristede's I've ever seen is right there, as well as other amenities that are springing up to the south because more people live in that area now. It's not so deserted. There's always activity around the hospital and people take cabs late at night.

Well, the DNA crime Map has that part of Brooklyn on par with HK/Chelsea and safer than Tribeca/Soho but less safe than the UES or UWS...

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/crime-safety-report/

I am going to say that there is a 93% chance that part of Brooklyn, Brooklyn as a whole, and NYC as a whole are safer than the metro area TOP is from.

I lived here for ten years, and never had a problem.

If you want to get a good feeling for the neighborhood, the NYT just called this place a 'pocket of transience' where people stay, have roommates, and leave for more expensive areas or less expensive areas.
People don't stay for long. They stay to work.

It's not a terribly great place, but it is a bargain in Manhattan.

i am far more intelligent than average if standardized intelligence tests, scholastic and professional performance, and economic standing are the benchmarks.
