Those signs that are up at construction sites all over the city don't really tell you what they're building. Is there a site I can visit that will tell me if it's a 50 story hotel, or a 10 story condo, or a 3 story parking garage, or whatever? Example -- 500 West 21st Street. The "What's Going On Here?" sign just says who the contractor is and the number to call to report complaints. Thanks.

"Another parcel at 500 West 21st Street and 10th Avenue changed hands in May after its owners group, including the developers Charles Blaichman and André Balazs, defaulted on the loan.

Sherwood Equities, a New York-based real estate development and investment firm, picked up the property, which has a 19,000-square-foot garage on it, for a fraction of the $50 million the original owners paid in 2007, said Ryan Nelson, a Sherwood senior vice president.

In July, Sherwood leased the site to a garage operator. Later, when construction financing and loans for homebuyers become easier to obtain, the development company could build 100,000 square feet of residential, hotel, office or retail space, said Jeffrey Katz, Sherwood’s chief executive.

“Right now, there’s still difficulties to developing in New York,” he said. “The market’s not exactly robust.”

A hotel planned for 511 West 21st Street, abutting the High Line, with backers who included Mr. Blaichman and the rap musician Jay-Z, has been reported to be another casualty of the economic downtown."

Go to nyc.gov, then Buildings department, where you can search by address. Under Permits Issued/In Progress, there should be one for NB (New Building). Then there'll be a link (whose name I forget) to view all the documents associated with that permit. The most useful is something called ZD1, the Zoning Diagram of the new building with its yards, height, setbacks, etc.

The DoB site is interesting in general, as you can see all the 311 complaints (most called in by crackpots or vengeful tenants) etc.
