All-in it cost us $5000 for a building permit. I don't know what the official name of the thing was but it wasn't "architectural permit." This amount included the expeditor. The permit(s) themselves are not expensive.

For work on a typical NYC condo or co-op that requires a permit, you're going to pay NYC DOB a $165 "records management fee," a flat $225-280 minimum filing fee, and 1.03% of the cost of the work in excess of $5,000.

DOB fees are in one of the most unfriendly documents, located here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/ll45of2011.pdf

An expeditor shouldn't charge more than $1500 if the plans are already drawn up by your architect to DOB's liking.

The good news is that if your architect and expeditor come prepared, you have a good shot at same-day review by DOB.
