Discussion about
So lots of indignation about disfunctional government, but why does no one except tea partiers get off their asses? Half of Washington is closed, why no protests? At leat tp nutters actually show up politically. Will link to RE by noting that if default, interest rates surge and people lose their nice savings for downpayment.

before you answer C0C0's insightful question, how does this compare to Canada?

Also, the WWII vets that showed up, are they in the Tea Party?

Somewhereelse isn't posting today.
Ottawanyc is obviously skating around in pointless circles starting threads about a government that he has no relationship with in order to feel better about abandoning his family and heritage.

Don't confuse apathy with being powerless.

Protesters don't accomplish anything. They didn't get us out of Vietnam, they didn't do anything about the 99%.

Protesting is bread and circuses for the disgruntled masses.

There was a huge protest on Sixth Avenue this past week, I estimated about 3,000 people, about GM foods. Did you even hear about it? Do you think they accomplished anything? Do you think the Monsanto board said "Gee, we have 80 million customers, but we're really going to pay attention to those 3,000 people with signs."

Tea partiers are on TV because it serves the purpose of Fox "News". Other networks report on them because they don't want to "miss the story". But they are a small percentage of the whole party.

The only thing that can be done is to vote Congress out. But the recent redistricting, and gerrymandering that resulted, means most of these people will NEVER be voted out because they represent the favored party, regardless of their actions. Most voters don't even know their names, much less what they did.

I have one Congressperson representing me. Not sure why anyone asks what I think of the Congresspeople who don't represent me. I don't get surveys from JD Power asking about cars I don't own.

Disagree that protesters don't do anything, especially if it deviates from the norm. i.e. getting a bunch of regular folks from different backgrounds to come together sends a loud messsage, as opposed to an interest group.

But perhaps I was getting riled up watching the cable news. All of the financial types were completely indifferent saying that a deal would be had at 11th hour, as is happening. So maybe I mistook apathy for rational cynicism dervied from too many similar past experirences.

This is the part you're missing. All protest groups are labeled as a special "interest group" by the opposing side. I'm sure the tea party members all consider themselves "a bunch of regular folks from different backgrounds to come together sends a loud message".

News Alert!
House signs government opening... foreigners unhappy with this country can now leave and go back home to their better government. Of course interest rates can stay low and people won't lose their savings, thereby propping up the real estate market in order to help people who stretched on their non-Manhattan RE.
