Building employee background checks

Anyone have insight into the thoroughness of background checks on building employees, and if they are updated?

All belong to a very powerful union. Once they join the union and pass their criteria, you're stuck if you hire them. The firing process is really difficult. Supposedly a board can run a background check before they take the employee.
