Discussion about
Hi there, Need advice - I live in NYC and am buying a new car but reading the Yelp reviews (aka horror stories) on the NYC garages are freaking me out. Does anyone know any self-parking garages (i.e. you don't leave keys to your car to anyone)? I am also open to park outdoors. Parking spot owner's - please contact me if you are interested renting out your space: ga376 (a t] yahoo {dOt} com) thanks!

Did you expect positive reviews on Yelp? Yelp is just an outlet for anger. In the olden days, people used to write angry letters, often not sending them because it was cathartic just to write and the act of sending didn't matter.

I share your concern. I had a brand new car in a garage on the UWS that was supposed to be terrific, according to YELP. When I took the car out one morning, the right front side in back of the headlight had numerous gouges and scrapes. I complained immediately and they claimed I brought it in that way. So I took time stamped pictures of the car every night when I turned it. The rough riding stopped immediately. HOWEVER, I found my car parked in between 6 cars ON THE SIDEWALK one morning. I was furious. I had a scheduled pick up at 6:30 AM and it took 30 minutes to get my car off the sidewalk. Apparently, they were overbooking the garage and putting the regulars on the sidewalk. I moved to the East Side shortly afterwards and used the garage in the building. I didn't have a problem for almost 5 years until they hired some new guys. One morning I found the panel of the inside of the driver's side flapping in the breeze. Another morning, I found my driver's side mirror on my seat, all smashed up. The staff said I brought it in that way, but the manager filed the claim. If the staff found something wrong with the car when it came in, they were supposed to report it immediately. They didn't. The garage fired the lot of them after a brand new Mercedes Benz has it's front bumper all smashed up. Other cars were damaged too.

There's one across W 31st from the Garden, and another on W 42nd by the tunnel exit.

Self-park doesn't lend itself to Manhattan construction, with irregular column spacing, lifts, narrow lanes, etc.

Given a choice, I'd go with the garage attendant who does it all day, rather than expose the car to random parkers.

If you're really worried, or it's a special car, for a price the garage will let you keep it right on the ramp for fast access.

Not exactly self parking, but Automotion (MMP) Parking, across the street from Baruch College at 150 East 24th (between Lex and 3rd), would be my choice if I lived anywhere near there. I wish they'd build one on the UWS.

Oops, no time to edit.

I just wanted to credit the pictures/videos back to the OP on reddit.

My old garage under Lincoln Towers was $500 seven years ago. Plus Xmas for hordes of attendants.

If this is like the others, they get you in with a low rate, then jack it up every year because it's such a hassle to transfer your tax-exempt certificate from one garage to another.

The automated sounds great. No having to call ahead for the guy to dig your car out from all the layers.

Some garages offer "Park & Lock" with reserved spot.
Does that mean you don't leave your car keys with the garage, so the valets can never move it .. or have a party in your car.

Try the one at E. 116 to E. 117 th St. and the East River. It's actually the parking lot for Costco, Target, Marshall's, etc. They charge $175 per month, tax included, for residents of NYC. The garage is open 24 hours, but you can only park on some floor to allow room for customers at the stores.

There are a fair number of garages which offer "park and lock"/reserved spaces for and upcharge off of their base rate. Sometimes you just have to ask. AFAIK all the Stuyvesant Town garages offer it.
