Discussion about
I am intending to move to Hudson Heights, but I work in Connecticut and must commute via car three times a week. How easy is iit to find street parking in Hudson Heights? I'd be willing to park pretty much anywhere in the neighborhood and walk to my apartment. I would generally be arriving back to the neighborhood around 5:30 to 6 in the afternoon, so that's when I'd primarily be looking for parking. From online research, the garage situation doesn't look great for someone who will be regularly commuting three times a week using a car. I'd obviously need in-out privileges and the ability to call ahead and ask that my car be ready for me to pick up each morning. Can that be found in Hudson Heights, without paying $400-500/month? All in all, what am I best off doing?

Parking up here is doable, but in my experience rougher than the rest of Manhattan. Everyone has a car. If you're coming home around 5-6pm, it shouldn't be too bad but late night is nearly impossible. Be prepared to circle the area for a while. The one positive of parking in the area is that street cleaning is only once a week, verses the rest of Manhattan being 2-3 days I think.

Garage parking isn't cheap but not as much as you're forecasting. I have neighbors that pay as low as $180/month, but generally the going rate seems to be around $225-300. You can pay less if you look for a garage east of Broadway and I don't think getting the car would be a problem.

River dale is nearby an are to checkout with much easier parking options.

Thanks for the very helpful response, aptdude09. I figured parking might be a bit tougher there since there's a higher rate of car ownership than in most Manhattan neighborhoods. Glad to hear that garages tend to run $225-300.

My wife works in Manhattan and subway access to her job is poor from Riverdale, so we aren't too keen on moving there. Would certainly be easier for me, but her commute would be considerably more difficult.

Not sure if your job will be commutable by Meto North or not. I used to work in Stamford near the Metro North station and I live in Hamilton Heights. I would take the D train from 145th st to Fordham Rd, walk a half mile to Metro North and it was a long commute- but only a real headache on heavy snow days. The interesting component to this was if I instead went to 125th St Metro North- my total commuting time was approximately the same as Fordham Rd, but connecting to Metro North outside of Manhattan cut the cost of the commute massively.

I stayed in Hudson Heights for close to a year and had a car. As others stated, parking at night is tough/nearly impossible. It's a very residential neighborhood, so spots late at night don't open up. However, if you return between say 4-7 it's not to bad - doable. The alternate side parking is 2 days (Mon/Tues) as opposed to 4-5 days else where in the city. There are quite a few garages. I know the one on Cabrini in Castle Village, is 24 hour, call ahead. You don't need to live there, but you will pay a higher rate then residents. Also, there's a garage at the Staples store on Broadway, also 24 hour, call ahead. I know people who use this one. This is one of the cheapest in the area. It"s on Broadway and 187?. Depending where your apt is you can go to the 181st subway station, down the elevator and exit to Broadway. A quick walk. You'll love living there. It's a great neighborhood and convenient when needing to exit the city. And don't forget to apply for the tax exemption for being an NYC resident. It will save you some $$.

I believe the monthly rate at the garage at the Staples store is about $350 a month.

Alternate side street cleaning is only once a week uptown now. As for a garage, if you don't mind a 10 or so minute walk, you will save money if you look east of Broadway and in the 180's-190's streets. There's many options

It's 2 days a week, Monday and Tuesday. But if you are on the "good" side then you only have to move your car once.
