Hi everyone, The air conditioner grilles on the outside of my co-op are outdated and just about all modern through the wall air conditioners do not work correctly with them (the ventilation is not sufficient for the air conditioner and the compressor overheats and blows warm). I've asked the super if either I can change it or the building can change it. The super told me that the grille needs to be changed from the outside of the building. As I'm on the fifth floor, it's more difficult than simply getting a ladder and unscrewing it. He reached out to the building engineer but we haven't heard anything back yet. In the meantime, my apartment is incredibly warm (yesterday, with the A/C on, it was around 84). Does anyone have any experience with doing something like this? If so, how did you go about doing it? Thanks in advance! [less]
No experience; but my gut tells me if you are allowed to use a window unit buy an inexpensive one and do so. Can't imagine any scenario where you can get this remediated this summer
Thanks for the reply. I actually have a window unit from my prior apartment and put it in the window on nights when it was way too hot. I asked the managing agent if I could use a window unit temporarily until the grille issue is resolved but she told me that I can't. I may go to the super and ask if he's okay with it if the building doesn't come up with a solution within the next few days.
My guess is that it will take your building/managing agent a long time to take care of your request. So out of practicality, I would suggest that you buy a freestanding A/C unit that vents through a pipe out of your window. The window unit could put you at risk if something goes wrong and the building didn't originally approve it.
