This is a smoking building

Halcyon is a smoking building. As a current resident I can tell you that cigarette smell comes into my unit. It comes in through the area in the walls where water and gas pipes enter the apartment. Those areas are not well sealed off at all, it is a pretty crappy construction job. Management completely ignores the issue. After 6 months of asking for help I keep getting the same response - "this is a smoking building, it is not our problem". I want to warn people considering living in this building to avoid it if cigarette smell bothers you. If anyone has a suggestion how to deal with this please let me know.

Option 1: Go to Home Depot (there's one on 3rd ave at 58th St), get a can of minimally expanding spray foam, and apply it to the holes around the water and gas pipes.
Option 2: Make sure your front door seals tightly -- you can install gaskets that will significantly reduce air coming in from the hallways.
Option 3: Create a positive air pressure in the apartment so that air isn't pulled in from the hallways, cracks in the walls, etc.. Do this by closing off (or reducing the air flow) of the bathroom and kitchen vents, and keeping an exterior window open more often.

Actually cigarette smoke can legally be considered a nuisance. I would check with an attorney.

Also take a look at this page: https://no-smoke.org/smoker-next-door/
There're some pieces of advice just in case you don't want to talk to your landlord directly.
