Why is that surprising?
Despite marketing itself as a poor country, it's officially an upper-middle-income nation (by world standards), with lower unemployment than the US, untold mineral wealth (including petroleum), arable land and water in abundance, etc. etc. I think I might have seen a Mexican at the top of a "world's richest" list recently -- a telecoms robber baron.
They just have an upper class that's ganging up with our upper class to beat down our working class. That's all.
Canadians just have trees, sandy oil, and Bullwinkle.
