Wondering if a building can go over the line from throwing a holiday party and make it appear as a Christmas celebration. Not everyone is of the same faith. Thoughts?
I mean, it really depends on the religious tone though right?
Christmas is practically an atheist capitalist holiday now.
See: NYSE & RockCenter Xmas trees, Macys parade, KFC Japan, on the one hand.. and "put Christ back in Christmas" complaints on the other.
Does having a Christmas tree in lobby count as too christmasy?
Does having one of the doormen dress as Santa and make the rounds at the party?
For me as long as no one is leading the group in a prayer I think its a matter of choosing to be offended or not.
On the other end of spectrum, my spouse works at a big megacorp with a lot of Indian employees so they had big Diwali parties in the office across a couple days... Didn't offend us. Meanwhile any end of year celebrations are diligently described only as "Holiday Parties", and no one is dressing there :-)
Agree with steve123. Unless there's some overt reference to religion it all feels more agnostic or pagan than religious. People often put out a menorah, too, which can help make everyone feel welcome.
@MTH - exactly, every building I've been in that had a xmas tree also had a menorah
Not sure there is any way to satisfy more than 80% of the people in any building short of not having a party.
the decorations and festivities are for the staff, from the residents, not for the residents. Respect that and try to enjoy.
@300 - Not having a party may also dissatisfy > 20% of the building?
Or more so - if you have one currently and make the decision to stop doing so, you'll upset >20%.
Exactly. So if less than 20% or so people are unhappy, ignore as in NYC you will always have that segment.
Having a holiday party is a great way for Board Members, building staff, etc to hide skimming supplies for their personal parties.
My building put up xmas decor on Nov 28 which I think is way too early and tacky.
when in doubt, follow the lead of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting.
