Discussion about
Does anyone know anything about these two coop complexes? Our impression is that Chatham Towers is more upscale. All comments would be really appreciated. Thanks.
Hi again, fatrabbit. Do some research on Curbed. Apparently tenants (at least in Chatham Green) have been upset since their block was cordoned off by the police after 9/11, and now the police are planning something else for the block that has them up in arms, but I forget the specifics. No dogs in Chatham Green (like Co-op Village, though many have them in Seward Park). Irene Apelbaum @ Weichert/Mazzeo gets a lot of the listings. Can't say I'm a fan of the neighborhood. I haven't looked in a while, but I there was some aspirational pricing on 1brs in 07 that was eventually price-chopped away.
Thanks, again, tenemental. I will look on Curbed. I don't suppose you have any idea what these buildings are like inside or what the boards are like?
No, sorry. "No dogs" is all I need to hear. Good luck.
In any neighborhood outside of prime areas of town, these would be considered cheap housing projects. Ugly as sin.
oops
SomeonewhoKnows, I agree with you about Chatham Green, although the shape of the facade (undulating)apparently was quite remarkable in its day. Re: Chatham Towers, it seems to be one of only two surviving examples of brutalist architecture in Manhattan. A couple of architect friends of ours think its exterior is great.
I have lived in Chatham Green for over 8 years. You can have dogs. The board looks the other way. Great resale value as there are Chinese people who always want these apartments. Most don't linger for too long.
fatrabbit, not sure if you're around, but there was an article in the Times (linked on Curbed) about the issues I mentioned above:

I love the location and the grounds are very well maintained. Safest place in the world IMHO and easy access to some of the best food in NYC. I considered these apartments when they were under $700 psf a couple of years ago, but the deal breaker was the ultra low ceilings. I also wasn't crazy about some of the pie shaped apartments. The only reason I'd buy there was for the location.
