Hoping for some advice. We're in a 2-bed, 2-bath rental; our rent covers electric so we never see a Con-Ed bill (though the building tacks on around $30 per month to anyone who has an AC, which of course we have). I'm trying to get an idea of what we might expect to shell out for electric for the same size apartment (roughly 1,200 sq ft) were we to move. Our usage is pretty typical-computer, fridge, a couple of TVs, a few lamps, etc. Any thoughts?
Our apartment is probably 900-1000SF, but we do have central AC units in 3 rooms + kitchen, and I'd guess our usage is a bit higher than normal. We average around $200/month. It's much higher ($350-$400) in the summer, but lower in the other months.
You are way ahead of the game! There was a huge increase in electricity costs beginning August 1 of this year.
I have a 2Bed/1Bath, approx. 875 square feet. I do have HVAC, not window units. My bill used to average around $80-$85/month and up to a maximum of $250 during the summer months, (and that is not being frugal and was the highest bill ever). This August I received a record high electric bill for $550 - no lie! There was a $175 delivery charge and the rest was usage!! Needless to say, the AC was turned off immediately. Apparently the delivery charge increases as the usage goes up.
My apartment is a 3 year old duplex on the ground floor and cellar of approx 950 sq ft. I have 2 through the wall air conditioners of 10,000 BTU's each, but only rarely use both at once. During the summer months I was running one of the A/C's 24/7 at 68 degrees with my utility bill running around $150 during the summer of 2007. This summer the same usage pushed that bill up to $225. During non-A/C month's the utility bill was around $85-100 month.
I imagine that higher floors would have higher summer utility bills as heat rises. Honestly when I used the cellar only a fan was neccessary which is much cheaper than A/C.
Watch out for electric heat systems.
The variable part of the bill (delivery supply taxes) ranges from 20-30c per kilowatt hour depending on the season and oil/natural gas prices. For a 700 sf 1 bedroom, we are using 200-250 kwh a month, and we watching it closely (A/C or heat only on in one room and a minority of the time, CFLs everywhere). Add the basic service charge and our bill has ranged from $50-85 last 12 months.
It can depend on how much sun your apartment gets--if the place bakes in the summer you'll see higher usage bills for AC. Same principal can apply if your place has electric heat--a corner apartment, say, will require more juice for heating in the winter. Also, the fridge eats a lot of energy--there can be quite a difference in usage depending on size.
Sounds like you have a pretty decent deal, though--30$ a month for electric for a 1200 square ft apartment ain't too shabby. If your rent is good, I'd probably stay put--who knows what's going to happen to energy prices going forward?
