Discussion about
Recommendations for reasonable moving companies please. Don't need fancy service
flatrate
These guys are great

I've used Flatrate twice and I would use their services again.
It's worth paying a little more for someone you can trust. After 17 years as a broker I will only recommend OZ and I do not accept referral fees from any movers or other service providers. Movers can be hell to deal with and make all brokers seem like angels, lol. OZ has proven to be honest and competitively priced. Good Luck!
I've used these guys and they were reasonable with excellent service:

with great reviews on Yelp:

And they have a really cool logo.
Thanks - this is a great start. I have flatrate coming at noon. I hate moving.
I used Flatrate and they were very efficient and reasonably priced.
Bram- did they really give you a flat rate period- no nickel and diming? I just hate that
flatrate were terrific...i did a move from florida to new york and they were great
Julia - did you do all your own packing?
I used flatrate once and had a mixed experience. While price & customer service were great, the moving guys tried to rip me off.
When they showed up they claimed I had plenty more boxes than was estimated so they've have to charge me more. I explained that the boxes were 1/2 the size of the estimate because I had lots of books but the volume & weight were the same. It was only after I suggested calling the office did they agree to honor the price with no problem.
Everything else went smoothly. I followed up w flatrate and complained about these guys.
So if you go with a 'one price guaranteed', just make sure you're on your guard and get everything in writing (as with any mover).
I have used flatrate 3 times and they have been great every time. I highly recommend them.
I have used Liffey 3 times now and they are great. Excellent service, they took care of my stuff and did fast work. My entire moving experience consisted of hanging out at a cafe on Saturday and drinking margaritas with friends. They gave me a call when they were done and it was perfect.
I have also had people reccomend OZ to me as well.
Flatrate just came - not bad - gave me a quote of $1330 for my 1 br with a lot of furniture. I guess I'll get 1 or 2 more quotes. Thanks everyone
We used A-Z moving 718.788.4920 two years ago. They were very good and efficient. I think it was something like $21 per hour per man, with the truck counting as a "man".
We moved stuff from 2 apartments (mine and my wife's) into one apartment, all in the same area. Had a bed, couch, several bookshelves, entertainment center, a bunch of boxes and bags, but overall probably on the light side for the apartment size. But it was under $500 all-in, after tips and everything, and very well done.
Charley,
Did the $1330 include packing? Also, could you give the web site or phone #? I'm moving in a few months.
Did you buy a place or are you renting?
Good luck with your move.
dwell - no I'm packing - last time we moved we had over 100 boxes - like the fresh direct size boxes - we have a full bedroom set, a full child's bedroom and living room furniture. So we pack the boxes - they take care of computer, electronics, all pictures on the wall, hanging clothing, mirrors and lamps. That includes tax too. So I'd have to tip the guys and that's it.

I wish I were moving to my own place but alas just another rental - albeit a much much bigger one. Maybe in 2 years when prices come down to eye level. Did you buy?
I've used Flatrate 3 times in 8 years. No complaints.
I have used flatrate three times in 10 years and on my last move, I bid out to 4 companies -- all within $800 ($3.2K - $4K). Flatrate was the cheapest. They packed me, moved me and unpacked (classic 6). I cannot believe how painless the whole process was -- Try David Lloyd at Flatrate - 917-731-7036. A++++ Plus, I called Chubb (my insurer) to make sure my valubles were covered during the move -- They were!! Good Luck!
I called Flatrate when I moved from the West Village to Tribeca %u2013 pretty much right down 7th Ave.
A month or so before I was to move, a Flatrate representative came to my apartment (which was a 500 sq ft. 4th floor walk-up) and quoted me $2,800. Granted, I had a lot of stuff, but I was blown away by that price. I told them that I was going to find someone else.
The next week I got a call that they could lower the price to $2,400.
Then, like clockwork, I received a call every week with a lower figure: $2,100 then $1,800 and then finally, a day or so before the move date, $1,600.
I am glad that so many have been %u201Chappy%u201D with Flatrate %u2013 and maybe they dealt with more honest representatives, but I found the whole price lower process very suspicious and frankly disingenuous.
I ended up calling a Craiglist moving broker and paid about $1,200 for the move %u2013 far less than the lowest %u201Cflatrate%u201D offer.
Just because they offer a %u201Cflatrate%u201D doesn%u2019t necessarily mean that it is the best one out there.
sorry about the weird formating issues in the previous post...
Hi Charley & ManhattanFox,
Thank you for the info.
Charley, good luck with the move & the new place.
No, like you, think I'll wait a yr or so, so I'm headed to a rental.
I was checking apt prices & they still aren't down enough. For ex, saw an apt which the Seller bought in 2004 for $750k & is now asking $1.4mil and that's after lowering the price from $1.6mil. So, prices still seem nuts. I decided to not look at apts until late 2009 because prices are still too high. I'm guessing 2010 may be the time to buy.
Next time go to http://www.divinemoving.com click on the free estimate request... I think you'll find Divine a bit cheaper...
This website was incredibly helpful when we were looking for honest, reliable movers. We've used two of their recommendations and were very happy. http://www.movingscam.com/
how much do you tip? i am just moving boxes...the estimate was $400...how much do you tip on that? 15 or 20%? or is it more like $20-30 per person? what is fair?
Last time i moved it was 1200 and i tipped $300 for 3 guys. I have no idea if that is too much or too little.
cccharley- did you end up using flatrate? How did the move go?
I am considering using Flat Rate - I was quoted $1300 for small 2bed room apartment- local manhattan move, elevator buildings. The guy who visited the apartment seemed nice, and price seems reasonable but I am concerned about the number of bad reviews on yelp.
So far- different experience from memito, i.e. no sales pressure, easy going rep etc. But with movers you always have to be on guard.
Does flatrate pack and unpack for you? Or just the move? We paid well under $1000, including a nice tip, for a big junior-4 move, seems like a better deal.
Flatrate - they pack/unpack paintings, electronics and lampshades. newbuyer- who did you use?
We used these guys to move from Dallas to NYC; they were excellent. We plan to use them again when we move again in May. (yeah it's a pain, but our rental which was a great deal last year is a crappy deal today.)
