Discussion about
For someone new to NYC, you all have been extremely helpful with all of my posts, so thank you. My last question of the year (maybe): What is an appropriate amount to tip doormen, porters and handymen for the holidays? We live in a large development; there seem to be 30+ people on staff, constantly rotating. We can't be expected to tip everyone, can we? We just want to be fair and acknowledge the pleasant and helpful service (we've only been here < 6 months). Thanks in advance for any advice.

We have about 7 people and I usually stick about $550/$600 in a single envelope and give it to them to divvy up. Would be a lot harder to do for 30 people.

My position on tipping is that you're tipping for the service you've received over the past year and for the service you expect to receive for the next year. I also think that you are expected to tip everyone on staff. Although you might not see them, they work hard and tips are much of their income too.

Kylewest, thanks for posting the original link. It sure is unfortunate that a significant and relevant discussion topic such as holiday tipping fell off the top list today. No doubt it is because so many jackasses like nyc10022 (EddieWilson) and Stevejhx (Steve Hanley) keep posting stupid discussion topics to further their agenda based on jealousy, loneliness, flagrant attention seeking and pedantry.

Man, this schmuck vwear (an admitted alias from someone hiding) has pulled this crap on multiple threads now. Noone even mentioned the topic, and suddenly he has to start personal attacks.

Nice life there, vwear.

Multiple folks have called out his stupidity on other threads as well..

BTW, I love how the idiot can't even use the SEARCH FUNCTION.

Nice, genius!

NYC - I agree with you. What's the big deal? It's a discussion board and if you can't point and click this is probably not the best forum for you to use.
