Discussion about
what do you think ? do you have to have bars on your windows near internal fire escapes? Internal should mean only those who live in the building can get on the fire escape.

With crime very near zero, I'd do anything I can to avoid window gates - you wind up imprisoning yourself, not keeping others out. There are little thumbscrew locks that allow you to secure windows into "open" positions, so a lock doesn't have to mean a closed window. Just make sure you get something that can be opened very quickly in case of a fire - no keyed or combo locks.

thanks for your comment. I don't wish to worry unnecessarily but crime is not at zero. i guess if someone were at the window they can smash it and climb in quite easily if the fire escape provides them the ladder to do so.

Yes, and if somebody is in your house, it's already too late. Check on line and at hardware stores to see what your options are. Also, just because they live in your building doesn't mean they're not a thief or a rapist or a sadist or who knows what. Better safe than sorry.

I have bars on all my windows near fire escapes. It is critical to get the bars/guards that are approved by the New York Fire Department. This way you can make it very difficult for most people tp break in through the window, and easy for the NYFD to enter through the window in an emergency.

thanks, the decision on this apartment may have been made for me as they are pushing me out of my price range so I think I will leave it. It was on CPWest so i guess in high demand. thanks for the comment to get NYFD approved items. it makes sense but i wouldn't have known to think of it.
