Discussion about
No wonder NYC is in such trouble. Instead of cutting taxes and wasteful welfare programs, Bloomberg is telling new yorkers to start sharing cabs to save money. Yeah, that will really stimulate the economy! http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/want-to-share-a-cab-with-a-stranger/

What exactly has bloomberg done to address NYC's stagnant economy. The financial sector, the city's lifeblood, is basically dead, and companies are leaving NYC in droves due to high taxes. All the innovative businesses in tech, engineering, biotech, venture capital, etc., are in california and texas. NYC's economy has not adapted to the changing times.

Instead, Bloomberg tells people how they should live their lives. And his attempt to bring the 2012 Olympics to NYC was an utter failure.

"cutting taxes and wasteful welfare programs"

wasteful welfare programs are those we cannot take advantage of? what % of the city's budget goes into welfare? it might not be as much, kind of like foreign aid. when people in usa are angry at the deficits, instead of looking at cutting entitlements they put the blame in foreign aid even though doens't even make 1% of the bugdet. this versus entitlements that already more than 50%.

Cracker Boy, sharing cabs is a civilized activity that used to be common in NYC, but fell out of favor because people who moved here from car-suburbs throughout the mainland are incapable of socializing outside of formal groups (workplace, PTA, Elks, Knights, church, etc.).

Similarly, it used to be no big deal to ask a person on the subway to slide over so that you can sit with your friend or whatever. I haven't seen that for years. Suburban lack of civility.

You all just figured out Mayor Gloombird an idiot. That Billionairess should not have been elected hopefully he does not serve a 3rd time. He has too much money to relate to the average NY'er in other words, he's out of touch with reality because he's a billionairess. All he wants NY'ers to do is spend money they don't truly have. Crime is not on his agenda but building up the failed WillyB waterfront is. Gloombird helped get us in this situation and will not help get us out of it. He's a known liar and I don't trust him.

mutombonyc: you sound erudite and like a person who could really bring this city together. Perhaps you should run for office.

Mayor Bloomberg has no choice regarding welfare programs, he would never get re-elected if he went against these programs.

Money routed through welfare comes back to the local economy in local spending, for the most part.

This is a really silly post - what's wrong with sharing cabs? This makes Bloomberg an idiot. It's simple, folks: if you don't like him, vote for someone else. But in a lot of people's minds, he's done some really great things for this city.

lostintransit, I can be an erudite just like julia, bjw2103 and you. If I did win the mayoral election I would do a better job and would have you as my deputy mayor. I have a better grasp of reality then Gloombird does. Your mayor said he would create 400,000 jobs in the next 4 years if he's re-elected LMBBAO, I would love to see how this works out if he's re-elected. Mayor Gloombird has no sense of reality for someone who makes 45K a year.

If Gloombird does get re-elected all the bridges that connects to manhattan will have tolls and the Nets arena will be constructed with more overpriced apartments creating more supply that will depreciate like bjw2103 property. Mayor Gloombird a billionairess but he's not a politician IMPOSSIBLE he played the politics to get those billions.

NYC a tourist trap he is constantly building for tourist to visit all of NYC not a bad thing but with him its obsessive (parks above ground) lol. Gloombird and rebate checks do you know the story? If not check it out http://curbed.com/search.php?blogs=1%2C4%2C9&query=rebate+checks
I will not vote for him Mr. Comptroller is my next president all the way baby.

alanhart - most cab companies in the suburbs require that you share a cab.

As for addressing the city's economy, do you really expect the mayor to create new jobs overnight? As for tax policy, much of that is directed by the state.

Unfortunately the state's tax base has become increasingly dependent on the finanicial sector.

uptowngal, "it will get worse before it gets better as President Obama said and I believe him. The mayor himself said he will create 400,000 jobs for NYC in the next 4 years if he is re-elected its a blatant lie. By doing so he would re-hire all people who lost their jobs and would have to bring people in from other states and countries to fill up 400,000 jobs. Yes, I'm aware that Gloombird talking to Gov. Patterson telling him the NYC needs money as Mr Gov said we are cutting back across the board. NYS is in debt by unemployment compensation alone. Maybe Gloombird should give up his billions to cut NYS deficit.

mutombonyc, your posts are ridiculous. Overpriced apartments that will depreciate? What's the result there? Cheaper apartments where they're needed - I think that's a good thing. You just want to rail against Bloomberg, which is a pretty fruitless exercise.

Bloomberg took NYC from being 50x better than Chicago to 100x better.

Seems like a pretty good job to me (only it was only a 50% improvement, because some of the growth came from Chicago sucking even more)

He is an idiot. So are his blind supporters. They don't care about failing economies and loss of jobs. Remember, these people don't think with their brains.
