Discussion about The Laney at 201 West 77th Street in Upper West Side
I always forget to change the category. This is for "Rental".
Is it the Willow/chicken building on the south east side?
northwest corner w/ Cottage & UPS
any updates on this building?
never ended up visiting.
Lots of rentals available... anyone seen anything in it? Are they truly renovated? True 2 bedrooms?
I haven't been in this building in 20 years, since I first purchased. I recall that the 2 bedrooms were standard. Back then it wasn't that well maintained but that is ancient history. It was well located for the car rental companies, the original Equinox, and the Fire Department, and now the JCC.
I just rented an apartment in this building, but I haven't moved in yet. The amount of listings associated with the building is wrong because the broker downstairs often lists other apartments under this address (basically using her office address to mask where her listings are). This building doesn't have any units larger than two bedrooms, but if you look at the listings you will see 3 br and 4br listed. All you have to do is click on the floorplans on those listings to see that they are not in this building because some of them are even post war.
I like the building (or else I wouldn't have signed a lease! LOL), but can't give particulars as I haven't moved in yet.
Can you put a w/d in your unit?
the new landlord is raising rents a minimum of 10%
what once was a good deal, is now meh
the B and D lines are the best, and god knows what this guy is going to charge for them
This building is a borderline slum. I've been a tenant for 5 years and this summer, we had no hot water or gas for over a month. The landlord's answer to this situation was to give us a small hotplate. The elevator breaks down weekly, the laundry rooms are disgusting. The landlord is as cheap as them come, refusing to fix anything until threatened and then only using the cheapest materials and labor, yielding very shoddy work. I will not be renewing our lease again this year.
I love living in this building and have lived here for four years already. It is so charming, with a neighborhood feel. I clearly have had a different experience than flyguy. The building is well-maintained and the management is responsive, down to earth and very reasonable.
The past year the building had the following issues:
1. No gas for at least 5 weeks and some lines had no gas for 4 months. The scary part is that people were complaining about smelling gas for months until someone called con-ed and gas was turned off.
2. Elevators are constantly broken and the fire department even had to get people out. Sometimes all four elevators were broken and people had to use the stairs.
3. The laundry floor paint was scrapped off and it took nine months for the floor to be finished. It was very dirty and disgusting. (btw. Laundry room only open 9am-9pm and access is only via freight elevator that doorman must leave post to operate.)
4. Hot water is frequently off. 5 days straight once. In fact it was off yesterday
Outcome of requested repairs to our unit: screwing shut broken window, duct tape over broken outlet, unable to repair fridge light bulb, unable to replace missing freezer handle, hot water handle replaced with old rusty handle that said cold.
The new landlord will not communicate with the tenants. We have called, sent letters and even registered letters with no response. Many other tenants in the building have the same problem. One tenant could not even find out if the rent check was received.
It is very sad, the old landlord knew everyone’s name, even the children. If you asked to have something fixed, he came up and looked at the problem himself and later asked if it had been fixed properly. He cared about the tenants. Unfortunately he died, the new owner cares only about money and the building has been falling apart since.
Do not live here! Seems great at first because the apartments are spacious. However, management is not responsive and they do not care about you as a person. Don't even think about getting repairs done. Ive persistently asked to have something fixed in my apartment and 5 months later the problem still hasn't been fixed. Stay far far away! Lots of cockroaches too!
Any recent feedback to provide on this building would be appreciated.
