home inspections on new contruction/conversion

I have an accepted offer in a new conversion downtown, but have yet to sign the contract. Should I hire an independent inspector to make sure everything is OK before signing? Is this a common practice? If so, can anyone recommend a good one?

Make sure you have a good lawyer who is experienced with new construction/conversion
