Brownsville
Covering one square mile in eastern Brooklyn, Brownsville gained a reputation as a slum in the early 1900s with notorious ties to the Jewish Mafia. As an African American community replaced the Jewish population, violent crime has remained high as surrounding areas’ crime rates decrease –Brownsville is considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City. Today, housing project towers and blocks of low-rise public housing buildings dominate Brownsville real estate. Large vacant lots are areas of hope –the city is considering programs to attract high-tech manufacturing to the neighborhood, potentially providing much needed jobs for the community.
