Clinton Hill
Once a fashionable area for the wealthy, Clinton Hill is now an affordable yet beautiful neighborhood. Majestic mansions built in the late 19th century, elegant carriage houses, and ancient row houses qualified a large portion of Clinton Hill to be designated a historic district. Three mansions built by Charles Pratt and their leafy promenades line “Millionaire’s Row.” However, outside the historic district, some areas of Clinton Hill are more rundown. The neighborhood is both economically and racially diverse, and crime is more prevalent than in nearby areas. Clinton Hill has similarly diverse academics –the artful Pratt Institute is located in the neighborhood but good public schools are scarce. The neighborhood is also less accessible –only the local C train goes to the area and its commercial areas are underdeveloped. Residents, specifically students, families and artists, are still attracted to Clinton Hill’s beauty and price. The neighborhood is only improving.
