Greenwich Village was first designated Grin'wich in the 1713 Common Council records. Following the American Revolution the area grew from a pastoral suburb to a center for the arts with a myriad of art clubs, learned societies and libraries. The Street

West 12th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues has been one of New York's most desirable blocks for well over a century. Before the street was developed for townhouses in the 1840's one of the landowners was Ambrose Kingsland, mayor of New York from 1851-53. The townhouse at number 24 was a gift to one of the United States' most decorated generals, Winfield Scott, who lived in the building during his presidential run in 1852. The Row of six houses at 34-44 West 12 was built by Frederick P. James, the principal of F.P. James & Co., one of the leading investment banking and trading houses of the time. In more recent times the block has been home to legends such as Jimi Hendrix who resided at the Emery Roth designed Art Deco building at number 59. The Forbes buildings on the corner of Fifth Avenue now house offices for the magazine as well as galleries that are home to numerous special attractions. Across the street is a beautiful Gothic Revival church modeled after the tower of Magdalene College, Oxford.
