Discussion about 240 Centre Street #5H
The sellers put a tribute to their late architect, Charles Gwathmey, in today's (8/7/2009) obit section. Four years of renovation....

That IS quite a place, isn't it? The sellers may very well miss him, after 4 years you'd probably either love or hate your architect, but it's also a shrewd move of possibly capitalizing on the sudden attention of his passing. Often an artist's works surge in value & appreciation upon their passing.

I still think it looks like the Starship Enterprise turned into house. Quite a place indeed.

I was always fascinated by that space: it was sold raw rather than at least a finished unit like the rest of the building. It also was one of the last units sold, hanging around for years and years after the building was mostly/otherwise totally sold out. Always loved the building lobby, etc, but found most of the layouts for the smaller units to suck. the building went thru a bunch of financial difficulties during it's early years as a Coop/during conversion, and if I remember correctly there was a bunch of issues over a community center for elderly Chinatown residents in the basement?

I would love to live in the building as well - have been fascinated by it since the early 90s...
