Union Strikes in Full Service Buildings?

Strike at 50 Murray - Other Rose Associates buildings too?
We just received a notice under our door saying that the union employee contract in our building expires on April 20 and there is a possibility the entire staff, other than resident manager and assistant manager, will go on strike. They explicitly laid out that all residents will have to access the building with a special ID card, take out their own trash, food deliveries will require residents to meet the delivery person in the lobby, no services will be available PERIOD.
Um, anyone else out there heard about this or experienced something like this before? Other than the doorman strike how ever many years back...This is all maintenance staff. We won't even be able to use out trash chutes or take deliveries of any furniture or items that would require the service entrance. I'm assuming this also means no one is allowed to move in or out?
Are you f'ing kidding me???

Also, don't mean to sound like a brat, but when you pay the premium to live in a full-service building, especially one that is not meant to operate without a full staff, this seems kind of absurd that tenants are expected to the keep paying for the services that no longer exist for an undetermined period of time.

this is 32BJ, which is the main union, so if there were a strike, it wouldn't be just 50 Murray, believe me.
Doormen's contract used to come up every three years, until 2006 when they negotiated a four-year contract. Yes I lived through some of these strikes. It makes move-ins and move-outs nearly impossible; everything else the residents can do.
I thought all the building service contracts expired concurrently. Maybe its changed or maybe it varies by rentals versus coops.

Yeah, our memo said move-ins and move-outs will not be permitted, along with all of the other fun stuff mentioned by NY10007 (and then some). Can a building legally force you to pay rent if they refuse to let you move out at the end of your lease?

Negotiations just started. Hopefully they can settle before there is a strike. Seems to me there would have to be a penalty in rent collection. When there's a transit strike and the train doesn't run the MTA doesn't collect fares, Ford can't sell cars if they aren't being made (no jokes please). I've never lived in a full service union building so I guess I'll find out...(although its probably different in a coop where maintenance covers a variety of costs)

I got an idea - if they can't reach a settlement, the owners could hire a trained monkey to open the doors. It is crazy what unions demand (and get) for work that a trained monkey can do! The stronger the union, the lazier the workers!

with 10% unemployment you might be able to find some folks to take out the trash and open the door that don't feel the need to be in a union.
