Stiglitz didnt' seem to understand that the Federal government can spend more than it takes in by borrowing and worst case debase the currency. States and local municalities don't have the same luxuries. I've seen a numver of his interviews where his answers were not that well thought out.

No riversider, stiglitz understands perfectly well that MOST (not all) states can't run deficits. Therefore he is arguing for MORE federal stimulus, as he, Krugman, and Roubini have been doing all along. He is not saying states can or shoudl do anything different, you numb nuts, because he knows they can't. He is saying (and Krugman had a grpah on this in his blog earlier this week) that the increase in federal spending is almost canceled out by drastic cuts in state and local spending.

...and before you respond, understand that he advocates for Nixon-style direct unrestricted block cash grants to states, FROM THE FEDERAL GOVT, so that states do not have to cut their budget. He did not say states should break their budget laws.

I happen to agree - a plain per capita grant of $XXX per person per state would allow each state to spend money as it sees fit, rather than the dizzying array of Obama stipulations.

The Nobel committee has really devalued the prizes in the last few years. Arafat? Gore? Krugman? Obama? Why don't they just call it the Anyone Against George Bush Prize?

Juliag is clearly dumb, because Krugman won for something he wrote in the late 1970s...long before Bush was a twinkle in anybody's eye. What's more, the Nobel economics committee is ENTIRELY seperate from the peace prize/literature/sciences committee, they have nothing to do with each other. Also, I find it hard to believed that a tenured professor at Princeton with a BA from Yale and Phd from MIT could be DUMB. Finally, the fact that pretty much every other economics organization globally has voted him one of the greatest living economists kind of makes it seem silly to single out the Nobel cmte....as though they were some outlier.

BTW, Milton Friedman was also brilliant.
