Discussion about
I am very sensitive to noise and wonder if anyone has a solution to the problem of window air conditioner condensers turning on and off as they cycle. Do any units avoid this noise? Any solutions out there?
Are you talking about your own window air conditioner? Basically, it consists of a fan and a compressor. The compressor turns on and off based on the thermostat. The fan stays on all the time, nicely drowning out wiht delightful white noise the sound (or lack thereof) from the compressor's cycling.
UNLESS you are foolish enough to use the "energy saver" feature, which saves only the amount of energy that is used to drive the fan, and cycles the fan on and off in unison with the compressor. Don't do it.
Don't be "green."
I love the white noise of air conditioners.
Sorry, I meant compressor. Yes the fan stays on all the time. That constant noise is fine. It is the intermittent noise of the compressor turning on and off that wakes me up. One thought I had was to buy an undersized unit and disconnect the thermostat so the compressor would run all the time. But someone said this might ice up the back of the unit. I am interested in other solutions or brands that have whisper quiet compressors.
You likely already checked this, but in case you didn't: an overly powerful unit is NOT recommended because of the way it will quickly cool a space, click off, click on, click off and drive you nuts. A unit with proper BTUs for the space will go on and off much less and operate more smoothly. Perhaps it isn't an "underpowered" unit you need. Rather, maybe you currently have an overpowered unit.
An over-powered unit will also not dehumidify as well.
We have one Friedrich and one non-Friedrich (which was marketed as "whisper quiet") and the Friedrich is without question quieter.
Be careful when you're shopping, though, because there are Friedrichs that are made in America and Friedrichs that are made in Korea (like all other brands of air conditioners) and the really quiet ones are the American-made ones -- one salesman told us it was a question of metal vs. plastic parts. If you have delicate ears, you'll probably want to spend north of $500.
We get this problem all of the time. Air Conditioner New York (http://www.airconditionernewyork.com) can help and has plenty of experience with this issue.
A bad installation will contribute to the noise. The ac compressor can cause internal vibration as well as shake the windows. Reach out to us and we'll make sure we give you the proper assistance.
