Index of manufacturing activity in the Philadelphia region unexpectedly dropped in May.

Japan’s economy slips back into recession

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/japans-economy-shrinks-sharply-in-january-march-2011-05-18

And yet stocks, oil, commodities all rise. LinkedIn, which doesn't even make money and is nothing but a website, worth $500 million. ZipCar - ditto zero money made & one of the most imitatable business models ever - is valued at $1 billion.

QEII is the single most foolhardy economic policy ever followed by any government anywhere. Monetarism at its worst. It is having exactly the opposite effect that it should have. The whole thing is going to crash when the plug is pulled on the free money, with disastrous effects.

when will the term "unexpectedly" be dropped and be replaced with "as expected"?

The problem is the negative spin that's put on it. "Dip" sounds like a downer. It's really a curtsy, which is quite elegant and fancy.

The only way to make the inflation stop - and inflation is what's causing this - is to withdraw the money from the system. But because things have been allowed to get so far out of control, the necessary result will be a crash.

My favorite chart, Spot Corn:

Either somebody's started eating a lot of tortillas recently, or this is a massive bubble about to burst.

population growth doesnt have anything to do with it ? fyi there are plenty of food shortages all over the world which are also part of what aparked the revolutions in the middle east.

"nothing but a website.". How can anyone take your analysis seriously when you say something like that? The valuation looks off to me too, but last time I checked eBay, Facebook, and google are websites, and they make plenty of money.

Well, aren't we full of good cheer this morning!

Wish I could see a more meaningful correction in Manhattan real estate prices. Alas, seems to be holding up remarkably well.

Wrong, HR. eBay is an auction system and, most importantly, the owner of PayPal. Facebook, to me, is worth as much as MySpace: nothing. Google is an online advertising distributor. At least eBay and Google make oodles of money; LinkedIn makes zero.

Marco, do you really think that the population has grown so much since September 2010 to account for the change in the spot price of corn? New babies haven't even had time to be born yet.

Keep in mind that harvests were lousy last year so stockpiles are very low. Ethanol production - which doesn't make a lot of economic sense in the U.S. - is also playing havoc with the price of corn. Meanwhile, demand continues to mount from prospering emerging market nations as they increasingly use grain for livestock.

That said, weather was awful last year around the globe. Even a semi-decent weather outcome this year would suggest some weakening in corn prices.

"LinkedIn makes zero."

Not true - they have ads, job listings, and more importantly, a freemium model that actually does quite well.

I'd like to overlay an honest facebook on top of the facebook most people put out. You know in Arnold's case he'd be like I'm all like governor banging a Kennedy. And I could post on his wall, but what about that ugly maid youre banging?

Or my 'friend' who keeps putting up his 'triathlons' finishes.... I'd put in, he how about the fact you pay girls to have sex wit you. I mean it's too hypocrtical for me. I know to much of them yet they only put on their good side. Flmaozzz

Corn prices are directly connected with the world's obsession with the Doritos.

The key to breaking the corn bubble is to disrupt both the salsa bubble and the nacho cheese bubble simultaneously thus causing an immediate halt to Doritos consumption thus collapsing the entire market.

As I have written many times the weakness to our economic system lies in the condiments.

As predicted, despite all of today's economic news, Dow up 45 on a paltry 158 million share volume.

Hard to believe the Fed doesn't see the inevitable outcome of this.

Holehome. When a borker calls me back or picks up the phone, I always say 'thanks for calling me back' or Thnks for picking up the phone so quickly.

Is w67 being sincere or am I doing a little 'mockerena' dance in my head?

So when I say, helphole 'good luck on your sale of Your two bdrm with the parking spot' am I making fun of you or am I sincerely wishing you well?

Aboutready, my mom was a sahm, my wife wishes she was a sahm. It ain't the sahm, it's this lady's incessant posting on facebook of I did this, my kid did this, my husband did this. But I'm sure she beats her husband every nite and makes her kid pick up take out kfc for family dinners.... That
Makes her so 'special'.

I have to tell you w67 I'm impressed with your focused fidelity. The obsessive fb mom is just burning her brain power on mindless dribble, most likely because she once had an intellectual focus to grind her wheels on but, the challenges of full time motherhood leave her an insufficient number of sharp edges on which to gnaw to a nub. Being available during the day, being an Adonis, possessing immeasurable charm, I'm amazed that you have yet to fall victim to the lonely, sexually depraved, unloved fb mommies that duct tape their obsessive compulsive disorder to social networking.
Many many many cases of fb induced sexual affairs.
Oh the naiveté of the electronically seduced morons of the world.
It's a tool NOT an obligation. A tool that leaves an unerasable trail...
I'll bet fb mommy can text doggie style.

falco, my sharp edges were definitely honed by being a SAHM.

well, then, w67th, i forgive you. but a message for your lovely bride, both options generally suck. the grass is always greener, and all that (although i'm fairly certain she has the mental acuity to be fully cognizant of this).

sorry, lucille, i disagree. our society does very little to aid and abet motherhood, good job, bad job or no job. i am quite happy with my decision to be a SAHM, but i'd never say it's been easy. although i will confess that i am not bored nor am i frustrated.

"both options generally suck" which leaves the option of not having any kids optimum, no?

"our society does very little to aid and abet motherhood"

our society does little to aid and abet anything, except work yourself to death, buy new sh*t all the time, and die crippled with debt. you're still supposed to LIKE motherhood, it's, like, nature and stuff

natural childbirth is "natural" also. doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like hell

yes, life is less, but still, nasty, brutish and relatively short. and I have no real problems in the greater scheme of things. but the romantic myth of idyllic motherhood is just that, and furthering it does nothing positive.

I read AR's comment to mean our society (United States) does not provide the "best" infrastructure to help families cope with 2 working parents & young children.

Many pros and cons to state-sponsored solutions (e.g. Canada & UK with 1-year parental leave for most employed persons).

does anyone recall the article a few years back about parents intentionally staying late at work to avoid home and children? spouses were fighting over who gets to stay late. over time, with so many people opting to rarely leave the office, it becomes the norm.

but yes, there are some accommodations made to working mothers (and fathers), that aren't available here. job sharing, for example, is much more available and socially acceptable in many locations. the list is rather long, and I need to go forage for dinner, so I won't bore you with them.

The 1-year parental leave laws and availability of daycare, anecdotally, have changed quite a few minds as to whether they should SAH or not.

Also, they quench the "greener" grass hunger. My friends who have had a year off work and stayed at home with their child have experienced it for long enough as to figure out if SAH-ing works for them.

His best one of all............ rents aren't going to increase for many years to come. My personal favorite was "It looks like the Dow's headed towards 3,000." Followed a little while later by, "I didn't say it would get to 3,000; I said it was headed towards 3,000." Can't make this stuff up!
