Best phone for Streeteasy discussion board?

Discussion about
It's time for me to get a new phone, I'm looking for opinions. I have an iPhone 4 currently, had an iPhone before that, didn't care to have any smartphones (e.g., Blackberry) before that. My usage case can be best summarized by reading the Streeteasy discussion board. Lots of browsing & reading, limited writing. So I am generally skewed to a good screen, no keyboard. Quality of software (smoothness, intuitiveness) & hardware (hand feel, scratch resistance) matter to me. So what should I be getting? Price is not a concern. I've pre-emptively put in my order for an iPhone 5, but I'm feeling screen envy with the Samaung Galaxy S3. Anyone opinions on those or other phones?

The Galaxy S3 screen seemed a tad too large for me (shirt pocket, thumb reachover), so I went with the Galaxy Nexus. https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=galaxy_nexus_hspa

It's pentaband, so it can handle service from both American Tel & Tel and the T-Mob. It's sold unsubsidized directly from Google, and aimed at developers/nerds (not that *I'm* either of those) -- carrier-unlocked, no-contract, etc. and will always be the first phone to get an OS upgrade, should you still have it then.

One big downside is the tendency for the USB port to break, especially if you use a cable other than the one it comes with (even though they're supposed to be a universal standard). For that reason, I suggest you also buy the pogo-pin desk hopper.

See http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Review_id2915

On the other hand, it's probably about time for the next version to come out -- but this phone was central to one of Apple's big lawsuits recently.

verizon 5 will access lte better than att inernat'lly. given that 3g in w europe is often faster than 4g here in the us, this is not such a crux issue. and lte aint happening in dev'ping world any time soon.

if you don't want to hassle, when travelling, with buying a local sim card, att is best, verizon is not great, and sprint is the worst (sorry six-seven).

with att 5 one can be on a call while on internet etc. verizon not, if on phone can't do anything with internet.

so far att wins--i like to be able to get on the web quickly while speaking on the phone, and i hate messing around with sim cards for me, and esp for my kids, when travelling.

We are a mixed marriage -- I have a somewhat-old Droid, my husband has an iPhone. The iPhone (on Verizon) is a better web browser/media player/computer. The Droid (on T-mobile) is a better telephone -- better sound quality, markedly better conference call capability, easier to multitask (say looking up something on the phone) while you're on the phone.

Each of them have lousy battery life that doesn't satisfy a power user. If you already have an iPhone, you may be used to this.

galaxy has an incredible screen but as a long time iphone user, i don't have the patience to deal with learning different interface. as you don't care about typing (nor do I), the swipe typing feature is of no use but i find it amazing to watch someone who is proficient use it.

i went from a iphone 3s to 4s last year and am still blown away by screen resolution and speed. i suspect you will find the same difference going from the 4 to the 5.

I get great reception internationally, horrible locally, on the iphone, with AT&T. I got even worse reception with Verizon. I hate talking on the phone, generally, so the iphone being remarkable at everything but phone use doesn't bother me. Usually. We have some issues with text delays on the 4, I'm hoping that won't be the case when we upgrade to the 5. I know a couple of people who love the Galaxy, however.

I have an iPhone 4 (contract finished, but my provider won't unlock it so I can sell it off) and have never had any trouble reading this site on it. I love the insane pixel density. Really the only complaint I have about the iPhone is that it keeps applications running even when you really don't want to have them taking up memory. Is there the equivalent of a "Quit" button on the iPhone?

good question--i use the task manager in android often

other points:
iphone phone audio is shit--i can always tell when i am spking to someone on an iphone--it's all garbled, esp if im spking to a fast-talker
so much of what you are subject to is network-related--ar, your text slow-downs are about the network, not the phone--verizon is consistently rated best (by wsj, and my experience) for domestic use--this said their 4g has been shit for the last many months--they have had a surge in subscriptions--go figure--also i have legacy unlimited data, which verizon begrudgingly provides given my early adoption--some posit that verizon has de-prioritized customers like me, tho i have seen 4G act shitty on forends' phones who have new pay-to-play contracts
expect shitty network service for a while from all carriers with the surge of new users that will accompany the release of the new 5

Yikers, agreed on the international thing. AT&T is tops when traveling abroad which my family does frequently.

In the last year. Beijing, shanghai, Taiwan, Paris, London, Italy, Greece, Sydney, Tokyo, korea, belgium. That's just our intl travels.

So why is w67 flaunting the jet set lifestyle? Bc I don't own a pos deleveraging depreciating albatross of a bubble 3bdrm with monthly carry of $20k. .

So I'll be buying the iPhone 5 on the sprint / AT&T and verizon network. Cause I'm fking rich bitch. I might spring for galaxy iii s just bc I rich bitch, 2x.

I like the new galaxy, fast, intuitive and I like the screen size especially for SE surfing. The i-phones OS is quite elegant but the GOOGLE driven droids are loaded with brilliant technology as well. I currently use a G2 via T-Mobile. I also travel a bit and what I really like with my unlimited plan and my droid is the ability to easily connect for both data and most importantly voice over a wi-fi network. This allows me to make phone calls from anywhere in the world over a wi-fi network with no additional charges (must have an unlimited data/voice plan).

AH - Outstanding.
KeithB - Nice.
AR - Agreed.
So I have to think that W67th also has a legitimate screen name; the character is clever, but it does not seem plausible that this character would have been been attracted to this board. If you guys tell me he is an independent, stand alone person, I will believe you, but I can't escape the feeling that he is someone's alter ego. If only I had Inonada's sleuthing skills.

I think both John Belushi and an ape are consistent with how W67th would like to be read, and I admit that he can be quite funny. Again, generally like the character and applaud the creator, but could do without the crassness. Have not read enough to know whether the essence of the character could survive without the vulgarity, but he was all good on this thread.

Thanks all for the recommendations. Went to the store to try out some of the Android phones. Still undecided. Not a good sign for AAPL, I guess, as there was never a doubt before. I think they'll survive nevertheless ;).

Alanhart, in theory I think I'd like the Galaxy Nexus, particularly the pure-Android aspect of it. But I figure it's "old" now, why not get the latest & greatest. Also, if I'm paying a phone carrier they should be subsidizing my phone. I guess I could do Virgin or something like that with unsubsidizing plan rates.

I understand you're concerned about the subsidy, because you're already giving all your money to your landlord when you can own instead.

I think the T-Mob has an alternate set of plans w/lower rates, and no phone subsidy.

There are also a lot more options than there used to be regarding prepaid: not just minute-buying, but monthly bucket (maybe unlimited) purchasing, no contract, and you can subscribe so that payment is made automatically (no "topping off").

A very un-w67thstreet-like comment. Worried about an extra $400 over two years?
At least you'll still have cable tv!

"My poisons:

1) My work -- my idea of a good time. Really.
2) Spending a stoopidly-large amount for a home in absolute terms.
3) Enjoyment of "common" luxuries -- eating out, trips, wine, weekly housekeeper, iPhone, cable TV, a nice gift for a relative / close friend, etc. -- without worrying about it adding up.

So I ordered a Google Galaxy Nexus per the recommendations above, along with a SIM card from T-Mobile that'll I'll sign up for a no-contract month. I'm going to play with it & compare to the iPhone, and if I like it better, I'll upgrade to the forthcoming version of the Nexus when it comes out. I figure comparing OS vs. OS is more important than best-of hardware, and Nexus is the only thing with 4.1 right now.

Thanks to all, but a special shout out to AH and Keith for directing me toward options I had not known about.

Question for T-Mobile users: how is NYC network congestion? I am on AT&T, and it is shit in NYC. Crappy speeds, a lot of inability to make calls, etc. I figure the T-Mobile spectrum is less congested. I am guessing AT&T's 4G is going to have a honeymoon period until more and more iPhones 5 come out, and then it'll turn to shit to.

'nada, I've been on T-Mobile for 10+ years - almost never had a problem in NYC in terms of network congestion. I am not on HSPA+, so your results might vary a bit, but 3G or regular HSPA are fine.

Look forward to your final review of OS v. OS! I have found my T-Mobile service to be very good in NYC, much improved from a few years ago. Good reception just about everywhere, not a lot of dropped calls. That said I have been with them since OMNIPOINT so have nothing to compare it to other than hearsay from friends. Seems like Verizon users have almost no complaints about service in NYC, just too expensive for me and I hear the customer service is really terrible.

Uh-uh, soon KeithB and alanhart will feel the wrath of a greatly disappointed inonada. Starting with his worry about the peel-off back cover and the plastic weightlessness of the Nexus.

My voice service is great (except sometimes in my apartment, which I own so I don't have to give my money to the landlord), and I've rarely noticed slowness in data. Similar to KeithB, I've been with T-Mob since I signed up with their other ancestor, VoiceStream, in 1998 or so, so I have no direct personal basis for comparison. I need to become churnier.

Without question, though, Verizon's technology seems to be much better than GSM at getting through big steel office buildings and the like ... but it sounds like you've already been on GSM anyway.

Have you found solid rumors about a next Nexus phone?

VoiceStream, that brings back memories. I had an Ericsson T28w with them.

I've had the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon since December 2011. Pleased overall, although the phone seems to get "lost" when traveling on Metro-North. Once in a while I have to put it into airplane mode and take it back out for it to get back on the network. Perhaps this will be resolved when Verizon finally releases Android 4.1 for the GNex.

I remember reading complaints about the back cover since the phone was introduced, but unless you're swapping batteries often, it really shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks all. I have a small preference for GSM because it is compatible world-wide, useful to be functional when outside the US. But I believe CDMA is the superior technology, from what people in the know had told me years ago.

>> Have you found solid rumors about a next Nexus phone?

Not really, just the Aug 21 leak and some blurbs about how Google is supposed to release 5 Nexus devices this year, only 2 of which have been announced to date. From the looks of it, there will probably be at the very least a Samsung variant that will be a close match hardware-wise to the Galaxy S3.

I promise not to project wrath about hardware quality on the Nexus. I understand it has less-than-the-best build, camera, glass, etc. But I get to see Android 4.1 now, see how it performs on less-than-the-latest chips, etc. Worst-case, I'll send it back. But I figure I'll just keep it around even if I stick with iPhone as a way to keep a window into the Android world.

Just wanted to circle back on this. I bought both the Galaxy Nexus ($350 unlocked) and the iPhone 5.

On hardware, iPhone 5 generally wins: hand feel, materials, speaker, camera, etc. The screen is a toss-up: iPhone 5 is slightly more sharp and has better colors. The Galaxy Nexus is bigger, higher-res, and has better black levels. The microphone on the Galaxy Nexus is appreciably better.

On software, I like Android better. It just has more functionality that I find useful. The maps are great, much better than what was ever on iOS 5, but it goes on from there. Voice functionality better than Siri, etc. Non-Google apps are generally less pretty than their iPhone counterparts, presumably because of the iOS-first focus.

I ended up returning the iPhone 5. I likely upgrade to the latest Nexus when it comes out.

Signed up w/ the T-Mobile pre-paid for $30/month for unlimited data & text, 100 mins phone plus $0.10/min thereafter. I generally talk very little, other plans w/ more/unlimited minutes for those interested.

until i get the i5 wired i cant say what i think. the i5 goes to a daughter if i decide i prefer droid.

one prob is that characters are oft smaller on the i5 than droid, and with these crappier eyes of mine that matters. i cant imagine switching to reading glasses every time i need to operate the phone. i know that's coming, but prefer later than sooner
