I just moved here due to a temporary family situation from the West Village and for the life of me I can't understand what people like about this place?? It is so ugly, overbuilt, no real park (sorry its hard to McCarren seriously), NO CABS, i mean it's like I am not even in the city, restaurants are just barely ok and none of them would've survived in Manhattan... What's worse, apartments are also really crappy, small and doorman buildings are rare from my understanding even among new construction rentals, so considering low service and smaller size they are not even that cheap. So far I found Brooklyn Bowl which is an ok scene, but that's about it and it's not enough to make me at peace with this place. What am I missing here? I feel like I want to shoot myself, can't wait to get back to the city. [less]
Because you are not cool.
Williamsburgh is awful, but leaps and bounds better than that tourist cesspool, the West Village, which has no park whatsoever, even worse suburban restaurants than Williamsburgh has, hideous glass towers built from leftover 1962 designs for the Grain Exchange Bank HQ building in Des Moines, and worst of all by far ... celebrities. Ugggh!
But for a more succinct answer: the people like Williamsburgh because it's just like Chicago.
Yes what you notice about Williamsburg is no secret. What's worse is being forced to listen to anyone's conversations when you are near them such as in line at the store or on the ridiculous L train. People all talk about the same 6 or 8 things including:
1) Where did you get that great flannel shirt? I was wearing flannels before anyone.
2) Where did you get that handstamp, were you at so-and-bar listening to so-and so? I am so cool. I get in that bar free and they don't stamp my hand.
3) Williamsburg is so cool. I lived here before any of you.
4) Where did you get those cool shoes with no support made of cloth? They go so well with your dirty corduroys and gas station button down.
5) People in Manhattan are such losers. We are so cool. We are all sustainable and care about the environment and we all played a role in OWS. Hey nice flannel shirt!
6) The EDGE is such a sell out. I would NEVER live there. They are ruining williamsburg which is already being overrun by such uncool people who think they fit in by wearing flannel shirts, getting handstamps and wearing cloth shoes. I am so cool
And the feral feline population in Williamsburgh makes it better than the West Village, too.
You are comparing williamsburg to the west village. Thats what you are missing. Its like comparing the D1 champion to the D2 champion and wondering why the D1 champion owned the D2 champion.
ggman, yes. The West Village totally suffered one of the nastiest broken tibia injuries ever televised. And Williamsburgers were not impressed. Except for the cats.
many of the good places in wburg threw in the towel when they found themselves drowing in a sea of mediocrity.
there are still a few good punk bars and salsa clubs.
still good for concerts, but not as good as bushwick.
the vintage shopping is still pretty good.
the people are unbearable. rich brats who don't know the difference between culture and consumerism. and the new businesses just celebrate their helplessness. it really is very sad.
remember when bedford ave was just a bulletin board? a coomunity of artists, immigrants & working class new yorkers. yes it could be dangerous but boy was it good back then.
i'd say it was still good up to just a few years back.
this town's going to the dogs. thanks bloomberg for selling the soul straight out of new york, and thanks kelly for giving him the army to do it with.
Williamsburg is a big burgh. Not as delightful as Washington Heights or its southern heights cousin, Hamilton, but as a fellow fan of the east village I'd suggest, glamma, that you roam a bit further, particularly east and south. It probably will come to an end, zoning is more restrictive now so it might take some time.
I've found that cats are not easily impressed.
Listen to Glamma -- but not until he/she takes her ipod headphones on the L train while listening to 15 year old nirvana songs. Yeah! Bloomberg Bad! He sell soul! He bad man!
My guess is your "family situation" forced you to move to Williamsburg. If it did not, I find it interesting that out of the thousands of other place to move to from the West Village (UES, Gramercy, Chelsea, UWS, LIC, EV, etc.), you decided to move to Williamsburg. The fact that you highlighted the Brooklyn Bowl is a data point that speaks volumes. Pleaes move back to Manhattan.
Alan, there is a feral feline issue in Williamsburg as there is in much of the city (even Manhattan South of 96th). The best thing anyone can do is support Trap, Neuter, Return projects which naturally reduce the feral cat project while continuing the rodent control services the cats provide and allowing for care, feeding and limited sheltering of the remaining (spayed/neutered) cats by dedicated volunteers.
Also, not all cats outdoors are feral. Unfortunately, many cats from homes are dumped outdoors by their people for reasons ranging from someone passing away to the all too common reactions to "cute kittens" reaching sexual maturity and howling/spraying (which can easily be rectified with spay/neuter). Trap, neuter, release (TNR) volunteers will usually keep these friendly cats indoors and arrange with no kill rescue groups to have them adopted into more responsible and loving homes.
And you are so right, AR, cats are not easily impressed. In fact other a can of food, or perhaps a new paper bag to explore, I don't know of anything that comes close to impressing them.
NativeRestless, red dots that move REALLY impress them.

There is a pet store on Driggs and a cat sits tehrthere at night, and sometimes he winks at you. That's why I like Williamsburg.
Williamsburg is nothing compared to Flatiron which has Eataly.
greenberg, does Eataly have a gatto in the window? Does it?
If there is no gatto in the window then we should pass a law to regulate the window.
Way to bring the conversation down.
AR, you can recover the conversation. Pick up where you left off above comparing it to Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights.
Some people can't recognize a joke. You've been very tedious recently, pedantic even.
Well, I'm glad you are paying attention to the nuances of my posts over time.
Such is your life. Why would you care?
Why would I care that you are paying attention to the nuances of my posts over time?
Easy - you are one of Streeteasy's valued posters.
If there was a gatto in the window at EATALY s/he would be the ultimate bodega cat!
Sorry but nada the pseudo. "analyst" and "finance " have taken "pedantic" on Streeteasy .
Finance guy, the other pseudo analyst.
what is your relationship with hunters burg?
here's what i like. great school for my kid. grand street playground. unbelievable amount of amazing restaurants. really good shopping. i can get an excellent hair cut at a variety of places. the greenpoint YMCA and the Greenpoint library. my condo (it's really very nice). my back yard. the italian shops on metropolitan - especially the butcher. the park on the river. mccarren park. my friends close by. quick access to work in manhattan. walking over the williamsburg bridge. cooper park. the art store on metropolitan. lots of good looking people that aren't wearing frumpy clothes. the ferry. the pier jutting out into the river. ability to walk in any direction and find a lot to do. great music venues. i can bowl and the best bowling alley ever made. the outside bar at the wythe hotel. drinks at hotel delmano. more top coffee shops than anywhere else, and no starbucks. to me, manhattan is banks, drug stores, over priced restaurants and tourists. i can't wait to leave every night, and i never go out there. also, i like the proximity to bushwick, and i've been hanging out at restaurants there more and more. also, amazing art and artists. met so many talented people. best brunch scene at so many places. lack of people wearing suits. i could go on...
yes AR you are totally right the burg is enormous, i was referring to the area the poster was mentioning. all suggestions welcome for places to try!
catman, i have never owned headphones.
one nice idea for a summer day - bike down bedford all the way to sheepshead bay.
glamma, think you're overstating the "issues" a bit. WB (even the area you're referencing) has its fair share of idiots, but it is not the quite vapid, cultural black-hole you describe. One might say it's exactly that kind of facile, swooping generalization that those you're referring to make so easily. And for Chrissake, buy yourself some headphones!
you all need to get some converse shoes, or another small shoe with no support. Get some tattoos to make up your lack of character since you are from a middle class family in suburban maryland. Talk about how you have been doing the following before anyone else: Wearing t-shirts with obscure bands, shopping at food coops, growing a beard, putting giant stupid holes in your earlobes, not having cable, insulting manhattan where you would never live, drinking beer from small breweries that no one has heard of except the eight people who listen to the same band, loving the L train, not showering, claiming you care about human rights by talking about it but never actually doing anything, and being a general douchebag.
I also forgot -- being kind of skinny and twerpy, and wearing those stupid glasses, and having a vinyl collection that you claim to love because you thing nothing sounds like vinyl. I also forgot one more thing, you also need to curse WB because you have been priced out (since you are a waiter or work for a startup internet company) and now you live in a 5 story walkup in bushwick
Don't forget those nasty knit caps worn indoors and in summer. Or is that style over with?
Hipster jokes? What is this? 2004?
bjw2103, everything old is new again. But these are handcrafted hipster jokes.
Catboy, meow meow meow meow.

I think the stench of the litter box is getting to him.
Just remember, your dad was the original hipster, and there's even a book to prove it.
>Just remember, your dad was the original hipster, and there's even a book to prove it.
who?
I have you all on block FYI.
greenberg, she's referring to http://tinyurl.com/c3sqb69 ... but paternity has not been definitively established.
But enough about that. How 'bout those Palestinians!
Catboy, have you ever actually been in Bburg or are you relying on an article from 2005? If anything the waterfront is looking more like a weird combination of meatpacking (tacky bars) and UES (soulcycle has arrived). So sure there Bburg has its plus and minuses but you should actually come here to get current with your material.
Ottawadouche, yes unfortunately I have been there. The last time I was there, it smelled terribly like a displaced Canadian (you?) so I ran screaming.
I can't believe GWC is resorting to name calling. I'm going to block him.
He'll spray you
Catguy, if it only takes a little odor to run away screaming, you might not be cut out for this town. Also, at least the Senators have a respectable hockey team.
I like Williamsburg because I made BOO-COOO bucks on my condo and have another one in the wings. CHUH-f'ing CHING is why you should like Williamsburg.
600% ?
Smell jokes cut the deepest.
BJ: We will start to see tonight how real they are.
roe 261%
Then stfu ... that's nothing for a transitioning neighborhood. Risk > reward so far. Especially one abounding in tarpaper facades.
jerkoff. two year hold.
alan hart is not a quack. read so here....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Hart_(writer)
alanhart, there was a story somewhere about some new residents embracing the tarpaper, vinyl siding, metal-awning style, as more authentic, blah-blah, instead of cutesy and precious like Brooklyn Heights.
So if you think it's a good return, why aren't you profit-taking? Are you like that guy at the roulette table? Are you on a lucky streak?
BTW, is Garden State Brickface still around? Like that.
That's Garden State Brickface and Stucco to you. And it's the best!
But I haven't heard from them lately, so they're probably in the Grand Prospect Hall in the sky. For all your catering needs.
i am profit-taking u fughen nimwit. close june 15.
Where are you moving to?
'burbs - where else. still have rental in 'hood too. it comps at 300%+ roe....
Why don't you move the closing date up before it all falls apart?
why would i do that? if it falls apart i get to keep their six digit DP (time of the essence - june 15; and they're no mtge contingency/all cash). u really r a TWIT alanhart.
Congrats on sale, although it might be a pyrrhic victory if you are moving from Bburg to the suburbs. What building, how long did sale take, what was soft, etc?
sqft (damn auto-correct)
Why would you move to the suburbs?
if you think i would give any animal on this board any glimpse into my real name or who I am, you are crazy.
so with that said....not naming building and not even naming what part of 'burg; list/cash offer at first open house (in addition to 6 other offers - above-list 80 ltv'rs and lower-than-list all cash'rs); total days on market less than 20; sqft above 1K;....and as far as 'etc' goes, again, you are a moron if you think i am going to just willy-nilly list all kinds of identifying information for you.
and u guys don't have wives/kids if you are asking me why the 'burbs.
Six digit DP. That's impressive.
why impressive. 10% of PP is usual K DP. 1K+ sqft * what the neighborhood is currently priced at means six digit DP...not sure why you are so impressed?
Isn't CondoPresident petrzitz under a new alias? The same guy who thought WB was the worst investment possible (yet pumped up his investments on Pitt St - not a joke)?
Yup.
If it walks like a petrofrizz and it shits like a petrofrizz ....
Has the stench of a petrozit. This is a malodorous thread, I think condoprez must have a noxious litter box also, he's awfully pissy.
I don't think it is perkytitz. There's room for more than one idiot on streeteasy.
pf was clearly User_Usertofferson: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/28946-newt-will-save-america, http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/29030-mitt-romney-knows-how-to-create-jobs, http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/28888-we-are-cooked
oh no.
SE, why?
Hi C0C0.
SE, why?
h1 c0c0!
SE, why?
>SE, why?
I think SE tries to stay neutral on individual neighborhoods, so it's unrealistic for you C0C0 to assume they will answer the OP.
SE, why let this monster run loose?
what could it be?
SE, why?
DP was a joke that clearly went over everyone's heads. Go ask a young person before you leave for the suburbs. DOn't ask your wife.
Coming soon to Williamsburgh, Bushwick and beyond -- direct from Norwegia:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/16/garden/farm-equipment-that-runs-on-oats.html?pagewanted=all
... but don't worry, if there are enough hipsters around you won't smell the "farm equipment" at all.
