Discussion about
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/broker_real_faker_vhYvwYZXwljgulLIBtZolI "A slick Manhattan real-estate broker is being investigated by the state after clumsily doctoring photos of a Greenwich Village town house to make it look less tacky for an episode of the network’s popular “Million Dollar Listing New York” show. Luis Ortiz, 26, was shown casually Photoshopping hardwood floors and... [more]

I concur with Ortiz - no harm done: Consider it the real estate equivalent of a botox injection! And why not? If the super-rich do it to their faces - why not their homes?

I'll never forget how, as a kid, I always laughed at a doctored post card from an already long past its prime Catskill Mountains hotel our family vacationed at.

On it, the notoriously dusty & muddy dirt path leading downhill to the lake was colored over in a ridiculous green, very much like the sunglass lenses popular at the time. "TROUT FISHING!" was also trumpeted - in a muddy, algae-choked lake - which, wisely, wasn't shown on card, as no amount of retouching could've helped.

The point is, I knew how ludicrous it was - the very reason why I found it so hilarious. And it certainly didn't stop us from vacationing there!

According to Ortiz, he only lied to other brokers, not to the public. So he thought it was ok.

They're pretty much a community of liars anyway (the lifeblood of the business), who know all too well if there's ANYONE they can't trust - it's a fellow broker.

i think it's scummy, and would avoid any business exposure to idiots like these.

if people wont go see a place based on photos of the place and its actual condition, then they arent looking for that kind of place. To misrepresent what the place is, and cause them to waste time viewing places which have been photo-shopped to hide condition, is typical broker-shit. You know, where you tell the broker what you do and dont want, and run off viewing one place after another, which fits well into the "dont want" category.

and spare me the comment that they are helping the buyer visualize what a place can be. Ill make that judgement for myself, or ill payy an architect and/or contractor for that, thank you.

why anyone would do business with these ortiz-dopes eludes me.

"why anyone would do business with these ortiz-dopes eludes me."

Oh I don't know...let's see now...because he's cute?

Well he is! I'll even go so far to say he's even hotter than Goldwyn Thandrayen!!! A very cute young broker indeed!!!

Unless of course he's photoshopped, botoxed (or both).

It's definitely unethical to do this without a disclaimer, but it's also not very productive. Anyone who buys a place based on listing photos alone is an idiot - this would only happen with new construction. So any buyer is going to visit the house, and the greater the disconnect between listing photos and reality, the angrier potential buyers get. It just doesn't serve any helpful purpose.

Careful there - can you spell "slander suit"- or worse?

Please don't be what your initials can also stand for.

Purgie, you do realize that Eddie Munster is a fictional character, right? And also that fictional characters cannot bring slander/libel suits?

Of course I do; unless you're just playing dumb - or trying to be cute - you know very well what I'm referring to.

In all seriousness, I'm really surprised you would post something as mean spirited as that. You really must miss Truth!

Eddie Munster bringing a lawsuit...yeah, right...like Uncle Fester suing the Hair Club for Men...geesh...

walpurgis: Yes, he misses having a target for his drunken comments. I haven't been on se in over a week.

Please, don't bring my name up to him or his alkie se friends.
Thanks, walpurgis.

Sorry, Truth - I won't.

I just couldn't resist, in light of all the past, er, "exchanges" - & besides - I was wondering how you've been anyway, so I was kind of hoping this would "bring you to the surface", if you will - & VOILA! It woiked! (Is that a periscope - or are you happy to see me?!?)

Hope all's been well with you - I remember had an extensive travel itinerary planned. Gotta run out with the dogs now in this lovely weather - catch up with you later.

Awww...thanks - but I feel better if I do.

Hope the weather's better there than here - Don't know if you were around NYC a few weeks ago, but Memorial Day weekend started out like this (worse, actually - it went down to the 40s!) Cold, rainy & miserable - & last Friday night was no better; after coming back in with the dogs it was like I was thrown into a pool. Yech. Just got back with them now, but thankfully it wasn't as bad as I dreaded. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Do your thing, walpurgis.
Just please leave my name out of your comments posted to the se alkies.

No, I wasn't in town for Memorial Day weekend.
I was in Italy, getting ready for the first concert of the tour, on June 8th in the U.K.
Will be in the U.K.: London, Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham and Liverpool;
until the July 3rd concert at Bercy Arena in Paris.
Then on to Amsterdam, where I finish the tour (I'm not working the last concert, back in London, July 8th.)

I'll be in Barcelona, drinking a glass of Cava while toasting "dwell".

Wow...after all that, you may need more than just one glass; I know I would.

I don't think I could handle that much work related traveling, but I'm sure you genuinely love it (you'd HAVE to!) It most certainly sounds like fun, considering the business you're in. Enjoy!!!

Thanks, walpurgis: but I don't drink while I'm working. Not even "one glass".

I can handle the "work related traveling" while on a European tour, can often travel on the tour bus and avoid airports/airline travel.
Thanks for your good thoughts and comments.

We just bought a "fixer upper". HOWEVER, the broker posted the doctored pictures with a disclaimer in the corner of each photo saying "virtually staged". On the broker's web site there were photos of both the before and after.

I can't imagine that Luis thought he would get away with this false advertising to seasoned brokers. I was surprised that he wasn't immediately fired. Perhaps there was some impediment due to the "Million Dollar Listing" agreement or they let this happen since it made better "drama".

Well he posted a blog entry talking about his standards, so all is ok. And the blog entry was authentic, because it had some bad grammar, and we know that the show or the brokerage firm wouldn't edit a blog entry.

This is what's wrong with Corporate America (and the entertainment industry) these days: they don't reward hard work, honesty, or integrity.

Instead, it seems that the more you fuck up -- and the bigger you fuck up -- the more you're rewarded.
