They were originally built to relieve a 1940s housing crisis and provide homes to returning veterans. Today, “Stuy Town” is a residential enclave of red brick apartment buildings, parks, and playgrounds that evokes an almost suburban atmosphere. The community is self-contained, with its own security force as well as a newspaper, the Town & Village. East River Park is an immediate neighbor, making Stuyvesant Town an even more attractive place to live.
