Best feature: This place is about as far from the typical New York City 1-bedroom rental as you can get. Measuring 900 square feet, it has so much space you’ll almost think you’re in the suburbs. The architectural details, however, make it undeniably more interesting. Located on a full floor of a 1905 brownstone, the unit has authentic details like two tiled fireplaces, a bay window with seating, and a lovely Juliet balcony.

Why it’s a deal: The median price for a 1-bedroom in Crown Heights is $2,000; across Brooklyn, it’s $2,295. So by comparison, this place is asking a premium. But the numbers only tell part of the story. The apartment has an expansive layout and plenty of atmosphere — it’s worth a little extra. And hey, it’s still priced $675 below the median price for a 1-bedroom in Manhattan.

Biggest drawback: This stretch of St. Marks Avenue is tree-lined and charming, but far from the subway. You’ll either have to walk 10 minutes south to the 3 train at Nostrand Avenue and Eastern Parkway, or 10 minutes north to the A and C at Nostrand and Fulton Street. Either way, it’s a solid 45 minute trip to 14th Street.
