Glassworks building

As far as housing lotteries go, this one certainly is a head-turner. That’s because this lottery will offer 19 apartments in the Glassworks building at 336 Himrod St., in Bushwick. Built in 1888, it was the original site of the Dannenhoffer Opalescent Glassworks factory, makers of opalescent glass. According to the Glassworks site, a freight train actually ran through the middle of it.

But, back to the lottery. This new housing lottery is offering 19 newly constructed units starting at $2,098 for a studio. While that price sounds a bit high for a lottery,  you would be correct. Let’s compare:

  • The price for a lottery 1-bedroom is $2,255 and the lowest market-rate price we would find is $2,499. But it’s pretty sweet inside with preserved exposed brick and industrial-style windows.
  • The price for a 2-bedroom lottery apartment is $2,714, while a market-rate unit goes for $3,138. Take a look at some interior photos:

So how to apply? First, the lottery is open to those who make 130 percent of the area median income, which ranges from $71,932 to $146,510, depending on unit and family size. Here are more details:
