Today’s unveiling of the West Side’s $25 billion project Hudson Yards had all the makings of a big Gotham event. It was attended by celebrities, dignitaries, politicians, lots of press, real estate movers and shakers, and big personalities. Even Big Bird from “Sesame Street” showed up.
Under overcast skies, the ceremony outside was held under the enormous Vessel sculpture, and kicked off with singer Andra Day performing “Manhattan.” She was followed on stage by CNN broadcast journalist Anderson Cooper, who welcomed speakers such as Related Companies Chairman Stephen Ross, Oxford Properties Chairman Blake Hutcheson, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and sculptor Thomas Heatherwick, who designed the fabulous Vessel staircase, which is an incredible object of scale and magnitude — whether you like it or not.

There’s lots of construction activity all around and leading up to Hudson Yards.
The observation deck on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards is in full view.
The observation deck won’t be open until 2020 (reservations are being taken now), but one of its unique features is the windowed floor.
The enormous Shops & Restaurants building runs along 10th Avenue between West 30th and 33rd streets.
The dapper Sean Marshall is the Hudson Yards’ brand ambassador. He was out in force, shaking hands near 10 Hudson Yards.
Up the steps from 11th Avenue, you can access Hudson Yards’ Public Square and Gardens, including the Vessel.
More than 100 shops will be anchored by Neiman’s presence on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors of the Shops at Hudson Yards.
From West 30th Street, the Vessel emerges from behind The Shed.
Some call it a pineapple, or wine glass, or upside-down Christmas tree. Whatever you call it, it is big — 150 feet high.
The Western Rail Yard, where trains for the LIRR deploy, will soon be covered up when phase two of Hudson Yards begins.
What’s an early morning celebration without a hostess serving scones to the crowd?
The singer began the ceremony with a soothing rendition of the Rodgers and Hart classic “Manhattan.”
