This 1-bedroom on the Lower East Side is a rare find, offering private outdoor space, updated, but unfussy interiors and a location right in the thick of things. It’s a clear choice for our Rental of the Week.
Address: 54 Allen St. #4A
Size: 1 bedroom
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
Best feature: The private outdoor space is hands down the apartment’s best feature. The balcony is directly off the living room and offers expansive views west across Allen Street. And while Allen Street is by no means the most picturesque of thoroughfares, it has real New York City grit. But, if real New York City grit is not your thing, no worries. The balcony is perched four floors above the hustle and bustle of the street. Inside, you get features such as pocket doors, track lighting, built-in bookshelves and nice natural light, especially in the bedroom.
Why it’s a deal: This apartment is asking $350 more than the neighborhood median rent for a 1-bedroom, which is $2,650. But, the apartment is less expensive than the borough-wide median rent for a 1-bedroom, last recorded at $3,200. When you factor in the private outdoor space, location and layout, that $3,000 seems fair.
Biggest drawback: You’re either going to love living on Allen Street or you’re going to hate it. If you value peace and quiet, Allen Street might not be for you.
