Murray Hill is a popular neighborhood for Manhattan renters, and it’s easy to see why. It offers a neighborhoody, residential feel while still being, technically, in Midtown. That means it’s got all the restaurants, bars, shopping, and conveniences of home. But it’s also just moments from Grand Central, the Empire State Building, the U.N., and more. It’s a great place to score a great deal. And our Rental of the Week, a bright Murray Hill 1BR, is a perfect example.

Address: 243 E. 39th St. #3B

Price: $1,875

Size: 1-bedroom

Neighborhood: Murray Hill

Best feature: Undoubtedly, this Murray Hill 1BR’s best feature is its price. But the space itself provides a lot to like, starting with those big, sunny windows. The light they bring in makes the living room/kitchen area feel bright and airy. The kitchen configuration opens up the rest of the space for living, with room for a desk as well.

In addition, there’s a small but separate foyer entry. Despite its miniature size, it goes a long way toward easing you into the apartment. (Rather than feeling like you step from the outside directly into the middle of the living room.) And the bedroom is real, not just a walled-off alcove, with a window and a closet and enough space for furniture as well as a bed.

Our Rental of the Week has a very likable setting, too! The building has a live-in super and a shared laundry room. It’s on a quiet, tree-lined block with everything you could want within just a few blocks. (Including Trader Joe’s, Fairway, and Target.) And finally, the super-central location makes transportation a breeze. No less than eight subway lines are nearby, plus the ferry and Metro-North.

Why it’s a deal: Murray Hill is a submarket of Midtown East. The median asking rent here is $3,305, according to StreetEasy’s Data Dashboard. That puts our Rental of the Week at more than $1,400 per month below average for the area! In addition, this unit was renting for $2,200 pre-pandemic, making it an extra-great deal right now.

Biggest drawback: If you’re looking for luxe condo-like finishes, or the bells and whistles of slick new construction, this Murray Hill 1BR is not the place for you. It’s pretty basic. But if what you’re after is a livable place in a livable neighborhood for a very wallet-friendly price? Run!
