The price: $750,000

The median asking price for a home on the Upper West Side was $1.6 million this September, according to the StreetEasy Data Dashboard. That means our Deal of the Week is priced at less than half the median asking price for the neighborhood!

Buyers who put down a 20% down payment of $150,000 can expect to see monthly payments of $5,289. This includes a mortgage payment of $4,221 and maintenance fees of $1,038, in addition to a $30 common area cleaning fee. Monthly payments aren’t far off from the median asking rent on the Upper West Side, which was $5,100 in September.

Why you’ll love it…

While this unit boasts some modern updates, it’s retained much of its original prewar charm. Throughout the unit, baseboards and applied trim outfit the walls, and the hardwood floors have unique border patterns. There are even ceiling medallions to adorn the lighting fixtures. The apartment’s living area has two sets of French doors: one leading into the dining room, and another leading to the second bedroom/office. Both sets of doors have a row of transom windows above, offering a classic and elevated look. The two windows that anchor the living area have black frames for a modern touch. The living and dining rooms could also be swapped depending on your needs and preferred layout.

In the primary bedroom, you’ll find a closet and a sizable window. The second bedroom, located off the living room, is similar in size to the first and has a Murphy bed that turns into a desk, making it perfect for an office or guest room. Additional built-in cabinets provide seamless storage.

The L-shaped kitchen features a suite of stainless steel appliances, including a refrigerator, oven with range, and a dishwasher — so no need to worry about dishes piling up in the sink. This room also has its own window, and cabinets stretch to the ceiling to offer ample storage space. Located at the entryway of the unit, the windowed bathroom is outfitted in white penny tile floors and white subway tile in the shower.

This unit is situated in a pet-friendly prewar building with common laundry, a bike room, and a backyard. If in-unit laundry is more your thing, don’t fret — the building does allow for installation within the unit. Green space abounds nearby thanks to the building’s location right between Riverside Park, Morningside Park, and Central Park, and Columbia University’s campus is just a few blocks to the north. The 1 train stop at 110th Street is just around the corner, and the B and C trains have stops within a half-mile. There’s an H Mart less than a block away, and nearby Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue are both lined with great restaurants.

…and why you might not

Unfortunately, this unit is located on the third floor of a walk-up building. It also uses radiator heating and doesn’t seem to have A/C. There aren’t any closets in the main living area or entryway, and both bedrooms are on the smaller side. But if you’re looking for a classic unit with flexible spaces and an abundance of vintage charm, look no further.
