100 East 53rd Street, a new residential tower designed by Norman Foster

The first 10 units at 100 East 53rd Street just hit the market and range in price from a $3.35M studio to a $21M three-bedroom on the 50th floor. That studio, however, offers over 1,000-square feet – bigger than your typical two-bedroom – so that sort of puts the price in perspective. That is until you consider the price per square foot clocks in at $3,239. Yep, there’s no getting around it, this new Midtown tower is through and through, foreign investor status luxury.

The building, rising 63 stories high, has been much anticipated by luxury real estate groupies and starchitect fans alike. Designed by the formidable Norman Foster and his team at Foster + Partners, the building is located on the corner of East 53rd Street and Park Avenue and stands directly across from the Seagram Building, which was designed by the equally, if not even more formidable architect, Mies van der Rohe in 1958.

The combination of the two towers certainly will make this corner of Midtown a destination for architect wonks. And those who come to pay a visit should be pleased by the pairing. According to the building’s website, Foster’s design is intended to complement that of the Seagram Building with the new tower’s minimal glassy form serving as a counterpoint to the dark, bronze facade of the older office building.

Although there are just 10 listings currently on the market, the tower offers a total of 93 units, split among the 63-story tower and adjacent nine-story outcropping at the building’s base. The interiors are designed by William T. Georgis and feature the classic fixings of a luxury living. You’ve got your floor-to-ceiling windows, your marble finishes and all the European and stainless appliances you could ask for. Building amenities include a spa, a 60-foot pool, a library and what has already been deemed a five-star restaurant.
