This 1-bedroom in the West Village is rare find, combining an ideal location, a competitive price and some envy-inducing amenities. It’s pretty much the jackpot of downtown Manhattan rentals — and it’s our latest Rental of the Week.
Address: 729 Greenwich St. #J25
Price: $2,685
Size: 1 bedroom
Neighborhood: West Village
Best feature: The price and location of this West Village 1-bedroom caught our eye, but it’s the character and charm that really set it apart. With a brick fireplace and white, wood-paneled walls, the place exudes a bohemian appeal. Can’t you imagine Joan Baez curled up in a scarf next to that fireplace? If that doesn’t do it for you, perhaps the garden access will. The back door opens onto a shared garden, a coveted quirk of older buildings in the West Village. You’d be hard pressed to find as charming an amenity in any of the new developments going up nearby.
Why it’s a deal: This place offers major savings when compared to prices in the West Village and Manhattan at large. The asking rent of $2,650 is $1,100 less than the $3,750 neighborhood median for a 1-bedroom, and it’s $625 less than the Manhattan median of $3,275. Objectively, that’s a very good deal.
Biggest drawback: The apartment is basic. The kitchen lacks both a dishwasher and significant counter space — but perhaps that goes with the bohemian appeal? With a door leading to the garden, the unit may also be drafty in the winter. In the warmer months, however, it’s certain to be glorious.
