About
Dutch Street dates back to New York City’s earliest roots, within the Financial District’s River- lined
confines. Early records reveal that the then- cobblestone toad first began appearing on maps in 1776,
and officially received the name, “Dutch” a decade later.
Dutch Street reflected this development accordingly, hosting a myriad of industries in an ever changing
cycle of storefronts. William Colgate’s soap shop opened in 1806 at 6 Dutch Street and remained there
for over a century, ultimately growing into what we know today as the globally- trusted Colgate
Palmolive Company.
