About
This free-standing building, designed in the Renaissance Revival style, was constructed in 1893-1894 as the New York Hospital. Incorporated in 1771, the hospital was the city’s oldest, and this building was constructed to replace another branch of the hospital that was located on Chambers St. The building to the east, at 9 Jay St, served as a stable and garage for the hospital’s ambulance and laundry facilities. A much photographed and unique footbridge over Staple St connects the two buildings and continues to serve as a connection between the two structures to this day.
