About

An office building located in the middle of SoHo, 488 Broadway is the unexpected home of the world’s first successful passenger elevator which was originally powered by a steam engine. Built in 1857, the architecture for the E.V. Haughwout Building was inspired by the Sansovino Library in Venice.

Known primarily as 490 Broadway, the building is considered by many to be the original skyscraper as it first employed the building techniques that are used today to allow buildings to soar to such great heights.
