The Brevoort at 11 Fifth Avenue was built by the Architects Boak & Raad in 1955 and was converted to a Cooperative in 1969. The 20-story Brevoort features 277 apartments including a Penthouse on top of each recessed tower. Sam Minskoff & Sons Inc., the developer, named the building “The Brevoort” because they built it on land formerly occupied by The Brevoort Hotel which incidentally was where Charles Lindbergh received the $25,000 Orteig Prize for his solo flight across the Atlantic. Buddy Holly and his bride, Maria Elena, lived in the Brevoort. Back then it was then a brand-new rental apartment building that had recently replaced the famous Brevoort Hotel, which had at one time been among the city’s finest hotels.
In 1714 Henrick Van Brevoort acquired land that straddled Fifth Avenue, ran eastward and then northward. In a city where the names of residential buildings have no historical connection to the site, it is pleasing that this building which has large and modern apartments, paid proper homage to its history.
The current day apartment house has committed to going “Green”. In 2011 the board completed a three-year capital improvement plan which included a gym on the lobby level, two “green” planted roofs on the 14th floor setbacks where the two towers begin, conversion to natural gas and a co-generation system, replacement of all windows and screens, façade work and electrical system upgrade/generating its own electric. This generation system enabled The Brevoort to be the only residential building below 14th Street to have power in the days following Hurricane Sandy. The building is a premier co-op with 24 hour doormen and concierge plus a resident manager. The building also features a spacious marble lobby with winged elevators, an internal garden and landscaped gardens around a circular driveway, Garage, laundry room with a half bath, new enlarged bike room and one storage bin (approximately 3 ½’ by 3 ½’ by 4’) for each unit at no cost to the owner. This historic, iconic Mid Century Modern apartment house is located in the heart of Greenwich Village on the “Gold Coast”, is one block from Washington Square Park on prestigious lower Fifth Avenue, and equidistant from all subways: West 4th Street; Sheridan Square, the N and R and Lexington Avenue local. This is a 40% cash down building, dog and cat friendly with board approval, pied a terre on a case by case basis, washer/dryers allowed in each apartment with board approval, parents can co-purchase with their adult working children with board approval.
